Kevin Cunningham, the manager and trainer of southpaw junior welterweight Devon Alexander, told BoxingScene.com that he believes Lucas Matthysse to be a better fighter than his 140-pound, Argentininan countryman and counter part, Marcos Rene Maidana.

Although he was dethroned last month as WBC titlist by WBO champion, Tim Bradley (27-0, 11 knockouts), Cunningham told BoxingScene.com that Alexander (21-1, 13 knockouts) is being considered for a bout against knockout artist Matthysse (28-1, 26 KOs), who scored eight knockdowns on the way to January's eighth-round stoppage of 36-year-old southpaw, former world titlist DeMarcus Corley (37-16-1, 22 KOs).

In victory over Corley, Matthysse rebounded from November's disputed, 12-round, split-decision loss to southpaw former three-time titlist Zab Judah (40-6, 27 KOs), whom Mattysse floored in the 10th round.

Judah's victory in the IBF eliminator ended a run of four straight knockout wins by Matthysse, who, more than a year go in February, stopped former world titlist Vivian Harris (29-5-1, 19 KOs) in the fourth round.

Cunningham told BoxingScene.com that he believes Matthysse to be better than Maidana (29-2, 27 KOs), noting that Corley, in August, had lost a toe-toe, clash with then, once-beaten, WBA interim junior welterweight titlist after rising from an eighth-round knockdown, In December, Maidana rose from a first-round knockdown and nearly scored a stoppage of his own in the 10th round of an eventual, unanimous decision loss to England's WBA king Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KOs).

On April 9, Maidana will face three-division king, Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KOs), the last man to defeat eight-division and WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao, doing so in March of 2005 by unanimous decision.

Alexander is promoted by Don King, whose negotiations for a Matthysse bout are being handled by Golden Boy Promotions.

BoxingScene.com: So where are the negotiations for a match up between Devon Alexander and Lucas Matthysse?

Kevin Cunningham: Don [King] and [Golden Boy Promotions CEO] Richard Schaefer are in discussions. They're in discussions for a possible Alexander-Matthysse fight.

BoxingScene.com: What was said by Marcos Maidana following Devon Alexander's loss to Tim Bradley?

Kevin Cunningham: Well, you know, right after the fight, Maidana was on doing an interview saying that he would like to fight Devon.

But then Maidana said that he knew that, after watching Devon fight Tim Bradley, that he thought that Devon would duck him. Maidana said that he thought that Devon would be too scared to take a fight with him.

BoxingScene.com: What are your thoughts about that?

Kevin Cunningham: You know, we were asked about a Maidana fight. Devon would have loved to have come back and fight Marcos Maidana. But Maidana chose to take a fight with Erik Morales.

So, now, like I said, we're in discussions, and we're considering and there are conversations about Devon fighting Lucas Matthysse, who I feel is a better fighter any way.
