What Lies Beneath: Don’t Overlook The Value Of A Good Undercard
For me, it wasn’t a main event. It was a co-feature, a bout atop a pay-per-view undercard, that made me fall in love with boxing.

Veteran heavyweight boxer Andrew Golota will take on American Danell Nicholson on Saturday in what's being billed as the last fight of the Pole's career. Saturday's clash in Czestochowa, southern Poland, will be a show-fight, but Golota has been training hard, knocking off the pounds in preparation for the punch-up.

Heavyweight Andrew Golota (41-9-1, 33 KOs) will bid farewell to the ring on October 25th in Czestochowa, headlining the card "Fight Night 9: Farewell." Golota will reportedly cross gloves with Danell Nicholson (42-5, 32 KOs). Nicholson, 46, has been inactive since 2003 when he stepped away from the ring after getting knocked out in four rounds by Wladimir Klitschko.

Before a sold out crowd at the Ergo Arena in Poland, an all-Polish nostalgic heavyweight encounter took place, as 44-year old Przemyslaw Saleta (44-7, 22 KOs) returned to the ring after seven years of retirement and stopped 45-year old Andrew Golota (41-9-1, 33 KOs) in the sixth round of a very brutal slugfest. Golota was coming off more than a four year layoff himself. The two boxers traded big punches until Saleta overwhelmed Golota in the sixth round and sent him down for the full count of ten.

Continuing his trips from one weight class to another, WBO #10 ranked featherweight Kamil Laszczyk (12-0, 6 KOs) went up to 135 lbs and outfought fellow compatriot Krzystof Cieslak (18-5, 4 KOs) en route to a convincing ten-round unanimous decision. Laszczyk started fast but Cieslak soon found resources to get back into the fight. Up until the midst of the ten-rounder, Cieslak was fighting on almost even terms with the Wroclaw native, but Laszczyk increased tempo down the stretch and effectively outworked his opponent in the closing stages of the contest. All three cards were in his favour: 99-91 (twice) and 99-92.

The return of the Polish heavyweight veterans. Andrew Gołota (41-8, 33 KOs) and Przemyslaw Saleta (43-7, 21 KOs) stepped on the scale for Saturday's battle at the Ergo Arena in Gdańsk, Poland. Gołota came in at 242.5, while Saleta was 231.2-pounds. In the past, the boxers were scheduled to fight each other two times, but both times the match fell apart for one reason or another. Golota, 45-years-old, has not fought since a 2009 five round TKO loss to Tomasz Adamek. Saleta, 46-years-old, is coming off an even longer layoff, having his last fight in 2006 with a win over Ed Perry.

Heavyweight contender Andrew Golota (41-8-1, 33 KOs), at age 45 and inactive since 2009, is still a huge draw in Poland. Golota held an open workout in Warsaw and the entire gym was mobbed by fans and reporters, with many waiting to enter to facility to get a glimpse of the Polish veteran. Golota will return in a farewell fight on February 23rd in Gdansk. He faces another Polish veteran, Przemyslaw Saleta (43 -7, 21 KOs).

On Friday night in Chicago, Polish heavyweight prospect Artur Szpilka (13-0, 10 KOs) scored an impressive sixth round knockout of Mike Mollo (20-4-1, 12 KOs), but the Polish fans were on the edge of their seats as Szpilka himself was dropped two times in the contest and baldy hurt. Now Szpilka moves on route to a clash with undefeated countryman Krzysztof Zimnoch (13-0-1, 10 KOs). The duel between Polish rivals scheduled to take place on Feb. 23 at the Ergo Arena in Gdansk. The highlight of the evening will be a heavyweight battle between Andrew Golota and Przemyslaw Saleta.
