NEW YORK – Amir Khan realizes he’ll encounter the biggest, supposedly strongest opponent of his 10-year career May 7 in Las Vegas.
The confident Brit just isn’t sure Canelo Alvarez is as much of a power puncher as critics of their WBC middleweight championship showdown consider the Mexican superstar. The 25-year-old Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) is about a 5-1 favorite over the 29-year-old Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) partially because Khan has been knocked out in lightweight and junior welterweight fights.
Nevertheless, after watching footage of several Alvarez fights, Khan doesn’t think he is in over his head.
“Is he really this dangerous, big puncher that everyone makes him out as?,” Khan asked after a press conference Tuesday at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square. “He hit Mayweather. Miguel Cotto, he hit him with clean shots. So I’m thinking, is he really this dangerous, devastating puncher that I should be scared of? Time will tell.”
The three-day, three-city Alvarez-Khan press tour to promote their HBO Pay-Per-View main event at the new T-Mobile Arena is scheduled to conclude Wednesday at Universal CityWalk in Universal City, California.
The final press conference, which his open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. PT. Fans need to arrive at 3 p.m. PT.
