Abel Sanchez: record, next fight and profile →
New York - Amidst the snowstorm which landed in New York on Wednesday, there is another storm brewing for Saturday night when the two consensus best middleweights meet inside the ring in New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Abel Sanchez has a lot of confidence in Gennady Golovkin. The Kazakhstan native’s trainer considers his fighter to be boxing’s best middleweight and one of the top fighters, pound-for-pound, in the sport today. Sanchez admits, though, that Golovkin has some work to do before anyone accurately could consider placing him near the top of the list of the best middleweights in boxing history.
Gennady Golovkin’s trainer doesn’t consider an unusually early weigh-in Friday to be a big advantage for Daniel Jacobs. Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) and Brooklyn’s Jacobs (36-0, 33 KOs) are scheduled to weigh in at 9 a.m. ET on Friday for their middleweight title fight Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. As the bigger guy who has more difficulty making weight than the 5-feet-10 Golovkin, giving the 6-feet Jacobs more time to replenish his body and add weight could be viewed as an advantage for the challenger.
NEW YORK – Abel Sanchez sensed something different in Gennady Golovkin during his recently completed training camp. Golovkin’s intensity throughout eight weeks of preparation at Sanchez’s gym in Big Bear, California, let Golovkin’s veteran trainer know that the Kazakh knockout artist understands Daniel Jacobs could pose problems his more recent opponents haven’t presented. The defending IBF/WBA/WBC/IBO middleweight champion is an 8-1 favorite over Jacobs,
NEW YORK – Abel Sanchez is encouraged by Daniel Jacobs’ confidence. Jacobs has mentioned numerous times that if he can land the same punches against Gennady Golovkin that a smaller, weaker Kell Brook hit him with, Jacobs will hurt the heavily favored middleweight champion Saturday night. Sanchez, Golovkin’s trainer, has taken that to mean that Jacobs will be aggressive in their 12-round fight for Golovkin’s IBF, WBA and WBC 160-pound titles at Madison Square Garden.

Abel Sanchez, the head trainer of IBO, WBC, IBF, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, warns that nobody should look ahead to a potential September fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - because both boxers are involved in dangerous fights in the coming months.
