Abel Sanchez, the head trainer of IBO, WBC, IBF, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, is warning that nobody should look ahead to a potential September fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - because both boxers are involved in dangerous fights in the coming months.
Golovkin will make a mandatory defense against Daniel Jacobs on March 18th at New York's Madison Square Garden in New York City. Canelo will jump from 154 to a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Both fights will be carried by HBO Pay-Per-View.
There is a growing number of fans, and experts, who are already looking ahead to a Canelo-Golovkin clash - which is being discussed for September during Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Sanchez views Jacobs as a very dangerous opponent and the best opponent, to date, of Golovkin's career. While he picks Canelo to likely beat Chavez, he says there could very well be an upset in that contest as well.
"I am among those who thinks that fighting at this level, like Golovkin is doing with Jacobs, that anything can happen, and I feel the same way with Canelo and Chavez. At this level they are all good and one punch can change everything.... obviously Golovkin is preparing for that not to happen ," said Sanchez to ESPN Deportes.
"Today there is talk that Canelo will go against Golovkin , but it can still become Golovkin with Chavez, or Jacobs with Canelo . That's the interesting thing here - that everyone has the possibility to win. These are the types of fights that can change their lives and they have a chance, which is why they are the kind of fights that we've been waiting for."
"I do not understand the fight (between Canelo and Chavez), but as a Mexican it's very good for Mexicans because the name Chavez still carries a lot of weight and Canelo is going up and we are going to have a good fight and the winner will be the king of Mexico."
