Filip Hrgovic’s trainer Abel Sanchez believes that Joe Joyce is starting to feel the effects of taking so much punishment across his career

Last summer, Abel Sanchez joined me for a round of golf in Southern California. Sanchez had just seen a home listed by my real estate team, and he made a stunning statement when I asked him which boxer he had in his gym, The Summit in Big Bear Lake, Calif.

Abel Sanchez knows David Benavidez better than most. As a 16-year-old, Benavidez went up to Sanchez’s now sold gym, Big Bear, and sparred with Gennadiy Golovkin.

This whole notion that there are weight classes for a reason apparently doesn’t apply to Terence Crawford. For the 35-year-old Nebraska, native, things have been easy for him in the ring. Maybe too easy. Even in the biggest fight of his life against Errol Spence Jr., there wasn’t a single competitive moment as Crawford dominated from start to ninth-round finish.

Over the years, Gennadiy Golovkin’s ring appearance has waned. From fighting three or four times annually to making a short cameo every other year, Golovkin simply hasn’t kept an active schedule. Abel Sanchez, his former head trainer, has also noticed that Golovkin has spent more and more time on the sidelines. Although the two aren’t as close as they once were, Sanchez gives his conjecture on why Golovkin has remained out of the public eye.

At one point, Keith Thurman was undoubtedly recognized as not only the best welterweight in the world, but one of the best fighters around. But after being forced into the medical room far more than he would like, the now 34-year-old has made sporadic appearances.

Despite being a pro for nearly a decade, Jaime Munguia has yet to register the sort of career-defining victory that would take him to the next level. In an effort to quiet his naysayers, the 26-year-old is attempting to map out a gigantic 2023.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez had grown tired of listening to the outside noise. Despite accruing an undefeated record through 44 career fights, the Mexican native was under heavy criticism surrounding his level of opposition over the years. Still, in spite of being chastised to no end, the 31-year-old urged fighters such as Dmitry Bivol to face him in the ring.

There was a bitter look of disappointment etched onto the face of Abel Sanchez. For approximately a decade, the world-renowned trainer had done his best to mold Gennadiy Golovkin into one of boxing’s most feared punchers.
