As BoxingScene.com previously reported, the World Boxing Association has ordered WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion David Morrell to make a mandatory defense against tough British boxer John Ryder.

Ryder was one of the names kicked around to face Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez back in December.

Canelo instead went with unbeaten Callum Smith and dominated him over twelve rounds to capture the WBC, WBA (super) world titles.

Ryder is really looking forward to facing Morrell, who only has four fights as a professional and made his pro debut in August of 2019.

"As far as I know, it's going to be my next fight, David Morrell," Ryder told Sky Sports.

"It's a mad record and obviously we've seen Lomachenko go into a world title fight in his second fight. I'm not putting him in the same boat as Lomachenko, but he's there for a reason, so it's a job that I've got to do, and do convincingly to fulfil my dream.

"I'm just pleased that I've got the chance of a world title fight. I'm going to grab it with both hands."

He would like to bring the fight to the UK, but doesn't have a problem with the contest taking place in the United States.

"I'd like it to be in the UK, but I'm enjoying fighting Stateside now," he said. "It's like a second home. I've had two fights there, two wins. If I do have to go to the States, I'm not too worried."

Ryder would love to pull off the win - hoping that it lands him a future opportunity with Canelo.

Although it doesn't happen that often these days, the WBA could potentially order Canelo to face whoever holds the "regular" title.

"Ever so often they call for the 'regular' champion to fight the 'super' champion. Every now and again they do it, so I'm hoping that they do, and I can get my chance at the big time," Ryder said.
