Williams Cruises, While Campillo Heisted in Corpus Christi

By Cliff Rold - 30-year old Jr. Middleweight Paul Williams (41-2, 27 KO) of Aiken, South Carolina, picked up his first real win since May 2010 on Saturday night at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas with a dominant unanimous decision over 36-year old Nobuhiro Ishida (24-7-2, 9 KO). It was the first fight for Williams since a soundly dismissed split decision win over Cuban Erislandy Lara in July 2011. Ishida was hoping to ride the momentum of a huge 2011 knockout of contender James Kirkland but it was not to be. Ishida came into the bout a pound over the Jr. Middleweight limit at 155, Williams just under at 153 ½ lbs. The referee was Jon Schorle. Williams began the fight behind his long southpaw right jab but soon walked into a looping right hand counter to knock him off balance. Williams landed two clean rights near the corner but Ishida responded, back at center ring, with a nice lead left. Action slowed to a feeling out form as each man surveyed the other to finish the first round.

It could have been a unification fight. What appears to be the best-matched contest of the weekend should feature an exciting, violent IBF titlist against an exciting, cerebral WBA beltholder. The judges screwed Gabriel Campillo out of his WBA belt against Beibut Shumenov in 2010. They almost gave screwed him again in a draw last year against Karo Murat. Saturday night, he can find redemption against a man who never fights to get to the cards. Redemption isn’t a storyline contained to the title affair. At Jr. Middleweight, Paul Williams tries to bounce back from what should have been two straight defeats (no, there is no rational argument for his winning against Erislandy Lara last year) against one of the best stories of 2011. Can his opponent keep lightning in the bottle?

Paul Williams hardly knows anything about Nobuhiro Ishida. The former welterweight and junior middleweight champion knows what we all know, that Ishida scored a shocking first-round knockout against James Kirkland on April 9 in Las Vegas. Beyond less than two minutes of action in that fight, in which Ishida dropped the previously undefeated Kirkland three times, Williams hasn’t seen Ishida fight.

By Jake Donovan - The 2012 season premiere of Showtime Championship Boxing is officially underway, as all four televised fighters made weight for Saturday’s show live from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Headlining the telecast is a 12-round junior middleweight showdown between former two-division titlist Paul Williams and Japanese contender Nobuhiro Ishida. Both fighters honored the contracted 155 lb weight limit, Ishida making weight on the dot while Williams came in slightly lighter at 153.5 lb.
