New York, NY - More people are talking about the future options of Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) than they are about his upcoming opponent, unbeaten mandatory challenger Dominic Wade (18-0, 12KOs).
Golovkin defends his IBO/IBF and WBA middleweight titles against Wade on April 23rd at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.
The fight will be televised on HBO.
Most insiders are predicting another Golovkin blowout. But don’t tell that to Wade. He’s ready to earn his respect and strongly believes that he's capable of pulling off a massive upset.
“I was ready for it,” Wade said. “I wish I could have asked for it. It just fell into my hands.”
In the opinion of Wade, the majority of of Triple G’s previous opponents were already beaten before they entered the ring.
“I just think you got to earn your respect,” explained Wade. “I feel like guys got in there and were defeated and scared before they got in there. No reason to be scared, they do the same thing I do.”
If you’re wondering what Wade makes different than previous Golovkin foes? Wade says it’s simple - “My heart, my style, my skill. Styles make fights. Willie Monroe had the right type of style but he ain’t have power and he got tired. They tried and they failed. I tried and will succeed.”
Although Golovkin has stopped 21 consecutive opponents, Wade feels he has to take chances and even feel the power from the Kazak middleweight.
“You have to take more chances,” explained the middleweight contender. “I think Lemieux was a little nervous. Some people get nervous and shut down. You have to mix it up. You got to box and punch. You have to try and miss the shots you can’t see and take the shots you do see. Eventually his power is going to be tested, you got to see what you got to do when you get touched.”
