Vergil Ortiz was one of three fighters requiring two tries to make weight, and the last boxer to the scale in order to hit the mark.
The leading candidate for 2019 Prospect of the Year was able to get it right the second time around, coming in at 147 pounds an hour after the official weigh-in to preserve Friday’s main event versus Brad Solomon. Ortiz Jr. (14-0, 14KOs) initially weighed 148 pounds but was able to shed the excess weight to move forward with his fourth fight of the year, which airs live on DAZN from Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.
Georgia’s Solomon (28-1, 9KOs) came in at 146.8 pounds on the first try, as he fights for the first time in nearly 20 months.
Ortiz looks to extend his perfect knockout-to-win run in the pro ranks, having never been extended beyond the 6th round and which milestone only occurred in his most recent start. The 21-year old knockout artist was taken past the 4th round for the first time in his career before ridding himself of former title challenger Antonio Orozco in six rounds this past August in his hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas.
His brief struggle at the scale here was part of a strange trend at Thursday’s weigh-in.
Former 130-pound titlist Alberto Machado also had to leave the room and come back in order to hit the contracted mark for his lightweight debut versus Luis Porozo. The tall and lean puncher from San Juan, Puerto Rico was initially 135.2 pounds even after stripping down to his birthday suit, but a quick bathroom break was all that it took to come in right at 135 pounds for his first fight since back-to-back knockout losses to Andrew Cancio, the first of which ended his 17-month stay as a junior lightweight titlist.
Rising prospect Luis Feliciano was also 0.2 pounds over the mark in his first try, but merely had to disrobe in order to make the contracted 140-pound limit versus Oxnard, California’s Herbert Acevedo, who weighed 139 ¼ pounds on the first try for their 10-round junior welterweight regional title fight.
