MGM Grand, Las Vegas - IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (32-3, 13KOs) retained his title with a twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Mercito Gesta (26-1-1, 12KOs). The scores were 117-11, 119-109 and 118-110.

Mercito Gesta walked to the elevator at the Sheraton in San Francisco’s Fisherman Wharf last year when one of his Filipino countrymen tapped him on the shoulder, holding up a poster and asking him for an autograph. As the fighter obliged him, his admirer had but one more request. “How do you pronounce your last name? Guess-tah, right?” the fan asked. “Not GUESS-tah, but HES-tah,” Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KOs) politely answered with a smile. Such is the relative anonymity the lightweight contender will attempt to escape Saturday when he challenges Miguel Vazquez (32-3, 13 KOs) in his first world title shot at the Las Vegas MGM Grand.

Trainer and co-manager Vince Parra told the BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard they have “a real good plan in place and we expect victory. The plan is aggressive obviously, and we’re looking at taking this fight one round at a time, dominating each round. We are looking to make an entertaining fight and come out on top by decision or knockout.”

Mercito Gesta has been a professional fighter for over 9 years. On December 8th he will get his first crack at a title when he faces IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez in the co-feature fight underneath the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez IV pay-per-view clash. The Filipino is relishing the opportunity that awaits him. I asked him about finally getting a title shot after one of his recent training sessions.

Undefeated Filipino southpaw Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta will pounce on every opportunity for a knockout when he battles IBF lightweight champion Roberto Vazquez on the undercard of Pacquiao - Marquez IV at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on December 8. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who gave Gesta the opportunity to fight for the world title said “what he’s got to do is to stay on this guy and pressure him from beginning to end. That’s the only way he can beat somebody like that.” Shortly afterwards the Manila Standard spoke to Gesta’s trainer and co-manager Vince Parra from his Big Bear training camp in California and Parra told us “we plan on fighting three minutes of every round. We’re obviously looking for a knockout but that’s not first and foremost, just to win every round and dominate the fight and leave no questions to the judges if it makes it that far.”
