Tony Conquest: record, next fight and profile →
Yorka Hall, London - Tony Conquest, 28, made a successful sudden transition from the regional up to the continental level and captured a vacant WBO European cruiserweight title against durable and willing but overmatched Irish Ian Tims.
Stellar British and Commonwealth title wins over James DeGale and Paul Smith in 2011 established Hammersmith super-middleweight George Groves as one on British boxing’s brightest young lights. However, injury has led to inactivity, but now restored to full health and fitness, the 24 year old Adam Booth managed starlet makes a welcome return to service this weekend, albeit at the HP Pavilion, San Jose, California, when he faces off with dangerous looking Mexican Francisco ‘Panchito’ Sierra. Tony Conquest made a mockery of his 8-0 (2) record last Saturday night on an Olivia Woodwin in front of a capacity York Hall crowd, stunning former British cruiserweight champion Leon “Solid” Williams with a lightning counter right hand from his southpaw stance that sent a shocked Williams sprawling to the canvas. The Sothern Area cruiserweight title bout had looked like a straightforward contest between the speed and skill of Conquest, who celebrated his twenty-eighth birthday in style, and the power of stocky Williams. Williams (14st 5lbs) pressed forward from the opening bell, looking to land his big hooks and overhand right, and connected early on with a hard uppercut that lifted Conquest’s head. Conquest (14st 2lbs) switched between stances, popping the advancing Williams with accurate shots from both hands.
The long-awaited showdown between former British cruiserweight champion Leon “Solid” Williams, and current Southern Area cruiserweight champion Tony “The Conqueror” Conquest, takes place at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday 7th July for the latter’s Southern Area title. BoxingScene spoke to Tony Conquest, who revealed that his injuries are behind him, and that he is in perfect shape for this intriguing dust-up between friends in which niceties will play no part. The 27-year-old Conquest brings an undefeated 8-0 (2) record to the ring and is confident that he can add the man they call ‘Solid’ to his list of victims, despite a first round blow-out loss in the amateurs at the hands of Williams, 9-4 (4).
Promising British Cruiserweight Tony ‘The Conqueror’ Conquest, 8-0, returns to action after more than eight months out on July 7th at London’s Iconic York Hall having finally overcome the niggling hand injury picked up in his last contest against Toks Owoh, 20-6 at the very same venue back on 18 November 2011.
There will be added incentive for Queensberry Promotions’ two Cruiserweight champions, Leon Williams and Tony Conquest, when they go head to head in what is set to be an all-out war at York Hall on 13th January, with Francis and George Warren looking to get the winner in contention for a European title shot at some point down the line.
Promoter Frank Warren today won the purse bids for the British Welterweight title clash between the Champion Lee Purdy and Denton Vassell.
