The President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman, believes the upcoming fight between Miguel Angel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is biggest fight in the history of the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry since Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. fought Hector Camacho, which took place in 1992.
Cotto retained his WBC middleweight title on Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn with a fourth round knockout of Daniel Geale. He is now expected to face Canelo sometime in the fall - once a step-aside deal is reached between Cotto and WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin.
"I think that fight is the most important in the rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico since Julio Cesar Chavez and Hector 'Macho' Camacho fought, and for me it's one of the biggest in the history of the rivalry - which includes Camacho Chavez, Salvador Sanchez vs. Wilfredo Gomez Edwin Rosario vs Jose Luis Ramirez and Ricardo Lopez vs. Alex Sanchez," Sulaiman told ESPN Deportes.
"That fight has been discussed for over a year and they are close to reaching an agreement, of course with the support of Gennady Golovkin. Cotto looked tremendous, Canelo also looked tremendous, that fight is going to happen this year, and it is up to the promoters. There is still time to fight in September but they may do it in October or November."
