Life comes at you fast, and it is now real life that Steven Ward will focus on, having retired following a loss last month to Mike Perez.

Steven Ward recalls the time he saw Hafthor Bjornsson, aka The Mountain, exit a lift before being told they were going to have a fight.

BELFAST – Two decades of friendship was ditched in the dressing room as Belfast cruiserweights Tommy McCarthy and Steven Ward emerged for a fight that both previously interpreted as being all-or-nothing, with the loser staring down the barrel of retirement.

Tommy McCarthy and Steven Ward, Belfast cruiserweights who grew up with one another, have sparred around 1,000 rounds together and who have travelled the world together as amateurs, were left wondering how close they really were as they stared one another down ahead of their fight on Saturday

Kamshybek Kunkabayev returned to the pros with a win, though failing to produce a knockout victory for the first time. The 2020 Olympic Bronze medalist earned a technical decision over Steven Ward. The ESPN+ main event was stopped in the seventh round, when a cut along Ward's forehead was deemed too severe to allow the bout to continue. It was a one-sided affair to that point, with the fight stopped at 1:05 of round seven. It was unclear whether the cut was caused by a Kunkabayev left hand or an elbow, leaving the referee to rule it as an accidental foul. Kunkabayev won by announced scores of 70-60 on all three scorecards.

Hard-hitting Kazakh super featherweight Sultan Zaurbek (12-0, 8 KOs) retained his WBO European 130lb belt for the first time by stopping badly overmatched British opponent Ryan Wheeler in six rounds. The fight was a co-main event of the show, promoted by the MTK Global in Almaty, Kazakhstan's former capital.

Belfast star Steven Ward will take on undefeated Kazakh phenom Kamshybek Kunkabayev for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific cruiserweight title as part of the huge MTK Fight Night in Kazakhstan on Saturday 27 February.

Thor Bjornsson says he loved every second of his exhibition bout with Steven Ward – and has warned Eddie Hall that if he doesn’t take it equally as seriously then the Englishman will be knocked out in the first round.
