Miguel Berchelt and Oscar Valdez remain on course for their highly anticipated showdown this weekend.

Both boxers have complied with all pre-fight weight checks ahead of their WBC junior lightweight title fight this weekend. The latest came at the seven-day mark, where WBC title fight participants are required to be within 3% of the contracted weight limit.

Berchelt checked in at 133.6 pounds over the weekend, while Valdez’s weight was recorded at 133.4 pounds. Both were under the allowable 134-pound mark, rounded up from the 3% tolerable limit above the 130-pound divisional limit for Saturday’s bout, which airs live on ESPN from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Weight has never been an issue for either boxer over the course of their respective careers, nor has been the case for any point during their respective training camps.

The WBC calls for boxers to be no more than 10% above the limit 30 days out from fight night and no more than 5% at the 14-day point. For this bout, that puts the respective limits at 143 pounds (30 days) and 137 pounds (14 days; weight limit rounded up to the nearest pound).

Cancun’s Berchelt (38-1, 34KOs) weighed 142.8 pounds at the 30-day mark and 136 pounds for the 14-day weight check. Valdez (28-0, 22KOs)—a two-time Mexican Olympian from Nogales, Mexico—weighed 142.6 pounds and 136.4 pounds, respectively, at those same points.

Berchelt attempts the seventh defense of the WBC title he claimed in an 11th round knockout of Francisco Vargas in Jan. 2017. The bout will mark his first title fight since a one-sided 4th round stoppage of former secondary titlist Jason Sosa in Nov. 2019, having since claimed a 6th round knockout of countryman Eleazar Valenzuela in a lightweight fight last July in Mexico City.

Valdez previously reigned as a WBO featherweight titlist, making six successful defenses before abandoning his reign in the summer of 2019. Two appearances have followed at junior lightweight. Valdez climbed off the canvas to score a 7th round stoppage of Adam Lopez in Nov. 2019. Last summer saw Valdez become the first fighter to stop former title challenger Jayson Velez, doing so inside of ten rounds last July in the very venue hosting this weekend’s championship clash.

Both fighters are still required to come in at or below the 130-pound divisional limit at Friday’s official pre-fight weigh-in.
