Tom Loeffler, promoter for WBC, WBA, IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs), admits they were shocked by Wednesday's decision from the International Boxing Federation - who decided to strip GGG of their middleweight belt. The sanctioning body will now order the two highest ranked available contenders to collide for the vacant belt.
After a lengthy review and period of deliberation the International Boxing Federation has vacated the IBF Middleweight title held by Gennady Golovkin since October 17, 2015, as a result of Golovkin not accepting one of the conditions put forth by the organization to grant him the Exception to Regulations to fight Vanes Martirosyan on May 5, 2018 which was not sanctioned by the IBF.
The IBF has stripped Gennady Golovkin of his middleweight title for failing to agree to make a mandatory title defense against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. The IBF informed the promoters of Golovkin and Derevyanchenko of its decision Wednesday afternoon. The Springfield, New Jersey-based sanctioning organization had until Wednesday to rule whether Golovkin could move forward with another fight, possibly a lucrative pay-per-view rematch against Canelo Alvarez, without having to first make his mandatory defense versus Derevyanchenko.
NEWARK, New Jersey – Gennady Golovkin left a hearing that lasted more than 4½ hours Tuesday still uncertain if he’ll remain the IBF’s middleweight champion. Daryl Peoples, president of the IBF, told BoxingScene.com that the IBF has 10 business days from Tuesday to rule whether it’ll uphold its initial decision, which ordered Golovkin to make a mandatory defense against Sergiy Derevyanchenko next or give up his IBF title. Regardless, negotiations are ongoing for the Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez rematch to be rescheduled for September 15 in Las Vegas.
Sergiy Derevyanchenko’s promoter and manager have taken exception to Gennady Golovkin’s promoter suggesting Derevyanchenko wasn’t available to challenge Golovkin for the IBF middleweight title May 5.
It's been about two weeks since unified middleweight unified champion, Gennady Golovkin, blasted out Vanes Martirosyan out in two rounds. Originally, Golovkin was scheduled to face Saul Alvarez on May 5th until the Mexican star tested positive for clenbuterol and was suspended six months by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
Gennady Golovkin and his handlers haven’t decided whether he’ll keep the IBF middleweight title after Saturday night. The IBF granted Golovkin an exception that will allow him to fight Vanes Martirosyan without being stripped of his IBF 160-pound championship. The New Jersey-based organization refused to sanction Golovkin-Martirosyan as a title fight, though, and has ordered negotiations between representatives for Golovkin and mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko to commence immediately after the Golovkin-Martirosyan match, assuming the heavily favored Golovkin wins.

But there’s another challenging fight for Jacobs, however awkward it might seem, that could become an attractive option for the former WBA middleweight champion. If Gennady Golovkin gives up his IBF middleweight title or is stripped by that sanctioning organization, Jacobs could be offered a fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who works with Andre Rozier, the same man that trains Jacobs.
