Sergiy Derevyanchenko: record, next fight and profile →
Middleweight prospect Jalil Hackett took a big step up in competition and performed impressively, winning an action-packed 10-round unanimous decision over three-time world title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
An attractive middleweight clash has been added to the New York bill topped by Edgar Berlanga-Steven Butler after it was announced that Jalil Hackett will fight Ukrainian veteran Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
It wasn’t perfect in the eyes of those who have boxed for a living, but Christian Mbilli’s record remains unblemished, and with another proving-ground bout likely looming, a showdown with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2025 appears to be nearing.
With half a round to go in Saturday’s Christian Mbilli-Sergiy Derevyanchenko fight, ESPN analyst Tim Bradley, who’d been calling for Derevyanchenko’s corner to stop the contest from the seventh round on, said of the Ukrainian veteran, with heartfelt concern and a measure of exasperation: “He needs a knockout to win. What is it, pride? Are we fighting for pride?”
The ascension of Christian Mbilli continued and the legend of Sergiy Derevyanchenko’s toughness and rotten luck grew Saturday in Quebec City, Canada, where Mbilli won a hard-fought decision.
Christian Mbilli takes on Sergiy Derevyanchenko this Saturday, August 17, at the Centre Videotron in Quebec, Canada. Mbilli is potentially on the verge of a huge fight and victory over the seasoned Derevyanchenko will cement his position as a top challenger to super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez. Already ranked at number one by the WBC and in the top three by all four sanctioning bodies, Mbilli will likely face unified champion Alvarez or perhaps the winner of William Scull vs. Vladimir Shishkin for the vacant IBF title should he win.
In the past 13 years, several fighters have seen their legacies cut short due to various circumstances, or just simply never reached their full potential. Let’s call them ‘hard-luck fighters’ As Sergiy Derevyanchenko prepares to face Christian Mbilli on Saturday at Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Canada, on ESPN, it’s a fitting time to revisit this list of boxers whose careers were marred by misfortune.
Christian Mbilli is ready to position himself as the next heir to the super middleweight throne, and the first big test for the Canada-based French-Cameroonian contender comes in the form of Sergiy Derevyanchenko, the tough Ukrainian who’s nearly spoiled plenty of plans.
