Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has been granted a little more time to decide his next move. The reigning World middleweight champion remains in talks for a mandatory title defense versus top-rated challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko as three sources have informed BoxingScene.com of a modified—but undisclosed—deadline to conclude such talks.
The Canelo Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev fight is not dead yet. Multiple sources have informed BoxingScene.com that negotiations are ongoing for Alvarez to fight Kovalev on October 19 or October 26 in Las Vegas. Kovalev has a WBO light heavyweight title defense scheduled for August 24 against Anthony Yarde in Chelyabinsk, Russia, Kovalev’s hometown, but that fight would be scrapped if Golden Boy Promotions (Alvarez) and Main Events (Kovalev) can come to an agreement soon.
Canelo Alvarez’s promoters expressed enough recent interest in making a deal to fight Sergiy Derevyanchenko next that their IBF purse bid scheduled for Tuesday was postponed. Multiple sources have informed BoxingScene.com that Golden Boy Promotions and Lou DiBella, Derevyanchenko’s promoter, are negotiating for Alvarez to make a mandatory defense of his IBF middleweight title versus Derevyanchenko either in October or November.
