SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Five-time world champion Cory Spinks won a unanimous decision over Sechew Powell on Saturday at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Mo., in an elimination bout to determine the IBF junior middleweight No. 1 ranking, and hometown cruiserweight B.J. Flores moved closer to a world title match by stopping Colombian veteran Hugo Pineda.

Shrine Mosque, Springfield, Missouri - cruiserweight contender BJ Flores (27-1-1, 16 KOs) stopped Hugo Pineda (39-6-1, 28 KOs) in the sixth round. Pineda hit the floor in the second and took punishment until the fight wa stopped. Flores grabs his second win since losing a twelve round decision to then IBO champion Danny Green in Australia. Flores' promoter Don King was in the arena to support his fighter.

By Thomas Gerbasi - Finally. After 28 fights and nearly nine years as a professional, Sechew Powell had his world title shot. All he had to do was beat someone he had previously knocked out in 22 seconds, Cornelius Bundrage, in fight number 29. It didn’t happen. At the Family Arena in Saint Charles, Missouri last June, Bundrage evened the score with the Brooklynite, retaining his IBF junior middleweight title via unanimous decision. Powell, 32, now had to take a good, hard look in the mirror and figure out whether he wanted to take another stab at his dream, even though the first one took him almost a decade. He did. “Deep down, as much as I knew it was a major setback, when I woke up the next morning, the passion was still there,” Powell told BoxingScene. “It was more of a thing like ‘Sechew, you just made this thing a whole lot harder for yourself.’ (Laughs) But again, this is a lifelong goal and dream I’ve had. I was a few miles away, and now the location just moved a couple hundred miles away, and I knew that. But I still wanted to go after it.” Little did he know that he would wind up back in Missouri just seven months later, facing former two-division champ Cory Spinks in an IBF title eliminator tomorrow night in Springfield. It’s a dose of good fortune for a young man who always had plenty of talent, but not as much good luck.

BoxingScene.com recently reported that the light heavyweight title fight between IBF champion Tavoris Cloud, and former two division champion Zsolt Erdei, was finalized for December 31st and will be televised by Showtime. The televised co-feature is likely going match WBA super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos against his mandatory challenger Guillermo Rigondeax.

Sechew “Iron Horse” Powell has an IBF junior middleweight eliminator on Dec. 3, and he thinks that contrary to popular belief, it will be against Cory Spinks on the undercard of the Abner Mares-Joseph Agbeko rematch.

According to a recent story on Boxingtalk.com, the IBF is ordering a junior middleweight elimination bout between Sechew Powell and Deandre Latimore. The winner would become the mandatory challenger to champion Cornelius "K9" Bundrage. K9 defeated Powell by unanimous decision in June.

On June 25th, junior middleweight contender Sechew Powell made a bid for his first world title when he met IBF champion Cornelius ‘K-9’ Bundrage for a second time. Powell had stopped Bundrage in eighteen harrowing seconds six years ago, a fight in which the two men traded knockdowns in the opening seconds before Powell would rise to ice Bundrage off with a straight left hand, and there was no reason to think he wouldn’t have success in the rematch.

BoxingScene.com recently caught up with IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius "K9" Bundrage (31-4) who is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Sechew Powell (26-3).
