Sandor Martin: record, next fight and profile →
Madison Square Garden, New York City - Former European champion Sandor Martin (40-3, 13 KOs) was not happy with the officiating for his fight with former lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs), who made his second appearance at junior welterweight.
Junior welterweight contender Teofimo Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs) headlined in the big room at Madison Square Garden for the first time with a hard-earned split decision win over Spanish southpaw Sandor Martin (40-3, 13 KOs) in a 10-round final eliminator for the WBC crown. One judge had the bout 95-94 for Martin, while two others had it 96-93 and 97-92 for Lopez.
Teofimo Lopez and Sandor Martin were never separated by more than 4 landed punches in any round. Martin sent Lopez to the canvas in the second round. Lopez landed 47 power punches to Martin’s body. Lopez’s 31-punch edge in power punches landed seemed to be the difference for the judges that tilted the fight in his favor.
NEW YORK – Sandor Martin didn’t pull off another huge upset Saturday night, but the Spanish southpaw gave Teofimo Lopez a much more difficult fight than the odds indicated he would.
Admittedly, Teofimo Lopez believes that he spent far too much time competing at 135 pounds. After snagging the WBA, WBO, and WBC “Franchise” titles from Vasiliy Lomachenko, the brash 25-year-old concludes that he simply should have opted to walk away from the lightweight division.
With two losses saddled to his record, Sandor Martin did his best to turn around what appeared to be a middling career. On October 16th, 2021, the Spaniard was given an opportunity to do just that. On the night, Mikey Garcia, a former four-division world champion and pound-for-pound luminary, attempted to use Martin as a stepping stone before heading into bigger and more mouthwatering bouts.
NEW YORK – Teofimo Lopez impressed Sandor Martin with how he handled Pedro Campa in Lopez’s debut at the junior welterweight limit August 13.
Teofimo Lopez beat the most accomplished, skillful southpaw the former lightweight champion could’ve fought in recent years. A confident Sandor Martin promised that he’ll do something Saturday night, however, that Vasiliy Lomachenko couldn’t accomplish when he opposed Lopez in October 2020. The Spanish southpaw predicted during an interview with BoxingScene.com that he’ll pull off another upset on short notice when he boxes Lopez in their 10-round main event at Madison Square Garden in New York (ESPN; 9 p.m. ET).

Teofimo Lopez flexed as if the chiseled contender were a bodybuilder after he easily made weight Friday afternoon. The former lightweight champion plans to figuratively flex some muscle Saturday night when he opposes Spanish southpaw Sandor Martin at Madison Square Garden in New York. Martin figures to be a more complicated opponent to
