Ryan Garcia parted ways with head coach Joe Goossen shortly after suffering a seventh-round knockout against Gervonta Davis on April 22.

Garcia and Goossen formed a union in 2022 and enjoyed wins against Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna before losing to Davis.

Prior to linking with Goossen, Garcia was coached by former trainer of the year Eddy Reynoso for a five-fight stretch from 2018 to 2021. Garcia enjoyed a 5-0 record with five knockouts under Reynoso’s tutelage, including the best win of his career – a knockout of Luke Campbell.

After the Campbell fight, however, Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) split from Canelo Alvarez’s lifelong coach and confidant citing that Reynoso didn’t commit 100% of his time to train him

Alvarez insisted that Reynoso was committed to Garcia, and that his stablemate at the time needed to be more disciplined. When hearing this, Garcia said he was tired and fed up with Alvarez’s shocking criticism.

Now looking for a new coach, Garcia is considering a collaboration with his former mentor.

Garcia and Reynoso will meet to discuss a possible reunion shortly after Alvarez fights John Ryder on Saturday in Mexico, a source with direct knowledge of the agreed-upon meeting told BoxingScene.com.

When BoxingScene.com asked Alvarez if his relationship with Garcia had been repaired and what would need to change for the union to be a successful one this time around, the undisputed super middleweight champion said: “You know, I'm not a trainer. I'm not Eddy. So Eddy needs to think and evaluate a lot of things. Whatever Eddy decides, I'm going to support him.”

Garcia is also trained by his father and coach Henry Garcia.

There is precedent for a former Reynoso-trained fighter to move over to Joe Goossen only to come back to Reynoso. Frank Sanchez was cornered by Reynoso in April after a one-fight stint with Goossen.

“I haven’t talked to anyone regarding how I’m going to move forward,” Garcia wrote on Twitter on April 27. “I’m taking time to think about a lot of things.”
