Roman Gonzalez: record, next fight and profile →
Promoter Fernando Beltran revealed that there is a high interest in finalizing a unification fight between world champions Juan Francisco 'Gallo' Estrada and Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez. However, he clarified that for now there has been no discussion with the representatives of the Nicaraguan star.
Kal Yafai could be two weight divisions up when he makes his return to the ring later this year. Yafai lost his WBA super flyweight title to Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in Texas last month in a painfully one-sided fight. But despite having a rematch clause in the contract for the fight in Frisco, Texas, there is little prospect of him boxing at 115 pounds again after years of battling the weight.
BANGKOK, Thailand -- Hard-hitting former WBC super flyweight world champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (47-5-1, 41 KO's) attended a boxing card earlier this month Workpoint TV here in Thailand's City of Angels, Bangkok.
According to Zanfer Promotions, who handle WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco "Gallo" Estrada, they are targeting a rematch with WBA champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez in 2020. The boxers meet the first time on November 17 of 2012. At the time Gonzalez was defending his WBA junior flyweight title against Estrada, who moved down in weight to take the fight.
Three years ago to the day, began the fall of the Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez empire. A controversial points loss to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai saw the first defeat in the stellar career of Gonzalez, at the time an unbeaten four-division and reigning junior bantamweight titlist. More so, he was regarded by most experts as pound-for-pound the very best in the world and arguably right alongside the late, legendary Alexis Arguello as the greatest boxers to every come out of Nicaragua.
Carl Frampton has drawn on the recent exploits of modern-day great Roman Gonzalez to inspire him in his bid to become a three-weight world champion. At the end of last month Gonzalez, 32, destroyed the three-year reign of Kal Yafai to take the Brit’s WBA super flyweight title in Dallas. Gonzalez topped off a mesmerising performance to knock Yafai out in the ninth round of their fight to become a two-time super flyweight champion adding to his stunning accomplishment as a four-weight world champion.
All that Roman Gonzalez needed was the chance to prove there still existed at least one last great performance. That opportunity came in the form of a bid at a second title reign at junior bantamweight, which became a reality following his one-sided 9th round stoppage of Kal Yafai in a throwback performance. The title-snatching effort—which took place February 29 in Frisco, Texas—marked the second fight into his ring return, having been out for more than 15 months prior to a comeback fight last December.
Andrew Moloney would have preferred a personal view of Kal Yafai’s latest title defense, as he’s long served as his overdue mandatory challenger. Instead, he simply admired the action and its aftermath from afar, as Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (49-2, 41KOs) dismantled the previously unbeaten Yafai (26-1, 15KOs) in nine rounds.
The great ones only last so long. We know it from years of watching them come and go. There is no set time table and every run is different. But when it’s over, it’s over. It’s not over yet for Nicaragua’s Roman Gonzalez, freshly minted with the WBA belt in his second title reign at 115 lbs.
FANS of the sweet science, this brutal art form, celebrated when their favourite little man once again lit up the sport. The excellent Nicaraguan Roman Gonzalez swept through WBA super-flyweight champion Khalid Yafai in Texas, stopping the game Birmingham man in round nine.
