Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas - Rolando 'Rolly' Romero (15-1, 12 KOs) had to get off the floor to score a controversial stoppage of Ismael Barroso (24-4-2, 22 KOs) in the ninth round, which allowed the once-beaten boxer to capture the vacant WBA super lightweight title.

During the ninth, Barroso was rocked by a two punch combination and was pushed down, but it counted as a knockdown. Barroso got up on unsteady legs and Romero was going for the finish. Barroso was fighting back, with the two were exchanging punches against the ropes. For whatever reason, referee Tony Weeks jumped in and waved off the fight - handing a TKO win to Romero.

Earlier in the fight, Romero was dropped in the third round by a hard left hand.

Romero, who was taking part in his first fight at 140-pounds, moved around the ring often, showing a lot of respect for Barroso's power.

In the aftermath of the fight, Romero agreed that Barroso should have been allowed to continue.

"I'll be honest, he’s a warrior and he should have been allowed to continue," Romero said.

“I boxed the entire time. I came in a little cold. I got cracked and I got up like a champion and kept going. I took my time and moved around. The man is strong so I had to be careful with him. Do you think I want to get caught by one of his (punches)? I told you the man can crack. I told everyone he could crack.

“I was a little buzzed, I was a little off balance and I got caught. I moved around and got back into it. The first punch was when I had him hurt to begin with. It was right on the nose, it was a little clip. He wanted to keep going and I wanted him to keep going as well."
