Local super-middleweight Rocky Fielding got a career boost worth £32,000 on Wednesday night when he won the latest instalment of Prizefighter in Liverpool.

The 23-year-old had only come into the competition at five days' notice but he showed his worth with three straight stoppages - a first for the competition.

Fielding beat Patrick J Maxwell and Joe Ainscough before facing Swansea's Tobias Webb, who arguably had a tougher route to the final against former world champion Robin Reid and Jahmaine Smyle.

Fielding's body shots hurt his opponent in the first round, with Webb grabbing on to his opponent and then sinking to his knees after being caught by a left hook with 20 seconds remaining.

Webb was then saved by the bell but with his energy having been drained by his earlier fights, his corner brought an end to the contest.

Speaking to Sky Sports after his win, Fielding, who had initially turned down the chance to appear in the competition before changing his mind, described the success as "life-changing".

"I feel unbelievable, I feel good," he added. "It couldn't have come at a better time for me. I've worked hard in boxing over the last 12 years...and it's come."

Fielding got the evening underway with a second-round stoppage in what was his fourth professional contest against the big-hitting Maxwell.

The next bout saw the re-appearance of Ainscough, another local fighter who almost died two years ago when he was stabbed trying to stop a fight outside a pub.

He won his quarter-final against Wayne Reed - a controversial decision in favour of Ainscough, who was put down in the third round.

Webb proved too much for Reid who, in making a comeback at the age of 40, was hoping his experience and physical strength would overcome the 18-year age gap.

It wasn't to be. Faced with the quicker Webb, he was holding on to his opponent from the off and also seemed unsuited to the quickfire format.

Smyle reached the semis by using his strength to good effect in beating Carl Dilks on a split decision.

Dilks, who came into the tournament as favourite despite being knocked out inside a round by James DeGale in his last fight, made the better start.

Smyle appeared more limited but took the fight to his opponent, with the decision narrowly going the way of the 24-year-old from Leicester.

Fielding was in complete control of his semi-final against Ainscough, stopping his opponent when he suffered a cut to his left eye at the end of round one.

Webb looked comfortable and moved well in his semi against Smyle, who again made best use of his robust style.

Despite suffering a cut mouth, Smyle threw big shots but Webb's superior skills and timing earning him a unanimous points win.
