Rocky Fielding made a successful first defence of his English super-middleweight title by blasting his way to a sixth-round stoppage against Wayne Reed.

The Liverpool fighter floored his opponent three times during the course of the bout and had him in trouble on a number of other occasions.

Cheered on by a home crowd at the Echo Arena, Fielding stormed forward early on and had his opponent hurt on the ropes in the first round, but Reed survived the bombs and saw it out to the bell.

Reed was hurt badly again in the fourth round, this time dropping to the canvas for an eight-count, but he once again showed his powers of recovery to stay in the fight.

But the end finally came in the sixth when Reed was knocked down on two separate occasions by a left uppercut and a hard left to the body, prompting referee Marcus McDonnell to wave the fight off.

The victory moves the 25-year-old Fielding's record to 13-0, with seven knockouts, while Reed was defeated for the third time in five fights.

He said: "I was happy with that. I listened to Oliver (Harrison, trainer) and got the shots off. At times when I switched off I got caught with silly shots and I had to get back in the corner and listen.

"I've been working on my power for the last three months. I'd never picked a weight up in my life and when I do I was just in the gym messing around, seeing what they would pick up.

"I'm working with Paul O'Donnell now at the Training Station in Liverpool. He's had me on three months of power. I've still got plenty of time to build on it and I've still got my skinny arms but my power's there and as long as I am doing that in the ring, then I'm happy."

Talk then turned to a possible British title fight, and he added: "A few more defences of this and a few more little fights. If you take Prizefighter away, that was my 10th fight. I've got plenty of time, I'm only 25, and I am going to keep learning, keep active and when the time comes, it comes."
