While it’s pretty much a given that the Nov. 23 Manny Pacquiao-Brandon Rios pay per view showdown will create some form of excitement, there are some subplots surrounding the fight that have begun to draw headlines of their own. The former WBA lightweight champion of the world and one of the most charismatic figures in the sport, Rios has added outspoken strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza to his team as he prepares for the challenge of Pacquiao. Ariza created a name for himself in boxing largely due to nearly five years of assisting Pacquiao in his training camps. During that time, the results Ariza was able to produce with Pacquiao were unquestioned yet he also had a way of creating attention because of his brazen approach to all aspects of the sport.

2012 “Trainer of the Year” Robert Garcia wants judge CJ Ross investigated for her inexplicable 114-114 scorecard in the Floyd Mayweather Jr- Saul “Canelo” Alvarez title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas last Saturday. Garcia told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that he personally believes Mayweather “won every single round but some people said Canelo may have won one or two rounds at the most” which is a view shared by Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz who recalled that Ross was the same female judge who raised a howl of protest around the world after she scored the Timothy Bradley-Pacquiao fight for Bradley.

BoxingScene ran a story yesterday where manager Cameron Dunkin revealed a fight with Nonito Donaire and current IBF Featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich would be possible for next year should Donaire get passed his now confirmed rematch with Vic Darchinyan in November. What was more surprising was that Dunkin was quoted as saying Robert Garcia, the trainer for both fighters, had already said he would 100% be siding with Donaire and would be working his corner instead of Gradovich’s if the fight took place.

Robert Garcia, trainer of Brandon Rios, has noticed a physical decline in eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao. Rios challenges Pacquiao on November 23rd in Macau, China. Garcia trained Antonio Margarito for his 2010 clash with Pacquiao, which took place at a catch-weight of 150-pounds. Margarito took a bad beating in the fight and lost a lopsided twelve round decision. During the fight, Margarito suffered a bad orbital bone injury and it led to his career coming to close.

When Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38KOs) vs. Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23KOs) was first announced for November 23 in Macau, many experts compared the match to Pacquiao's 2010 battle with Antonio Margarito. In that fight, whict took place at a catch-weight of 150-pounds, Pacquiao gave Margarito a vicious beating over twelve one-sided rounds. Robert Garcia, who trained Margarito for that fight, and currently trains Rios, does not view the two fights in the same light.
