Robert Garcia: If No Mayweather, Pacquiao Wants Mikey Next

By Victor Salazar

New York- Although he may not be what he once was, Manny Pacquiao is still a major name in the sport of boxing.

When the news broke that Pacquiao would be aligning himself with Al Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions, the chatter throughout the industry were many of the possible matchup at 147 with the Haymon stable - which may eventually lead to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather somewhere down the line.

For the moment, Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KO’s) is rumored to be fighting Adrien Broner (33-3-1, 24 KO’s) in January on one of the PBC pay-per-view platforms, which at the moment is likely Showtime.

One name that isn’t in the welterweight division that could potentially be a fight down the road is Mikey Garcia (39-0, 31 KO’s).

His trainer and brother Robert Garcia says those conversations have definitely been discussed.

“We spoke to someone very close to Pacquiao,” Garcia told BoxingScene.com.

“They told us that Pacquiao wanted to fight in January and that he wanted a win before he fought Mikey. That’s Pacquiao’s plan unless Mayweather comes back but from what I understand is that Pacquiao wanted a fight in January and then Mikey.”

Garcia feels that a fight with Broner will be difficult for Manny but does expect him to win.

“I think Broner will put on a good show and put up a good fight but I think Pacquiao wins but it won’t be easy,” explained Garcia.

The way we view boxing is changing with the streaming services across multiple platforms. This movement has made it a buyer’s market for fighters and Garcia says his brother has fielded offers from streaming giant DAZN. Garcia says his brother has used those offers to maximize his worth.

“What Canelo and Golden Boy did with DAZN was amazing not only in boxing and in any sport,” stated the trainer.

"It’s great to be a part of it and it’s the next big thing to come out of boxing and we look forward to working with them. You can ask Eddie Hearn, I’m not going to give you a number that he dropped on Mikey. But Mikey has something better cooking. Mikey is very smart and he uses all the offers he gets from everyone and he uses it for his next fight. It adds up more in his next fight. But Eddie's offer to Mikey was unbelievable.”

Mikey Garcia fighting Pac is highly likely and has a very high probability rate. However, as far as him fighting May is concerned; He can forget about it because that will never happen.
