Trainer Freddie Roach is hoping five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) continues to fight.
Mayweather announced his retirement following the September 12th twelve round decision victory over Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Roach admits to having selfish reasons for wanting Mayweather to stick around - because Roach wants WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto to get a second shot at Mayweather's undefeated record.
Cotto challenged Mayweather in 2012. It was one of Mayweather's toughest fights of the last few years, but he still came out on top with a solid unanimous decision over twelve.
Back then Cotto was being trained by Cuban coach Pedro Diaz. The Puerto Rican star switched to Roach in 2013.
The switch in trainers has made Cotto confident that he would knock Mayweather out in a rematch, according to Roach.
"After this fight [with Canelo Alvarez on November 21], if Mayweather is available I'd like to get that one more time because [Cotto] said he would knock him out if I was in his corner, and I like that fight for him," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
Speaking of retirements, there has been some loose talk that Cotto himself could retire next year once his lucrative deal with Roc Nation Sports runs out.
Roach would like to see Cotto continue even further, but he won't make any attempts to influence that decision.
"If he decides to retire, I'll be really happy [because] he's had a great career. It's totally up to him at this point. The thing is though, the way he's been looking I think he's got more than just a couple of fights left in him," Roach explained.
"The thing is, he's a smart kid and I don't like it when people stay too long in the game. Its very hard and hard work every day. If he does retire, I'll wish him the best of luck. And if he doesn't - Mayweather watch out."
