NEW YORK — Yuriorkis Gamboa is the opponent many boxing enthusiasts envision Nonito Donaire eventually fighting.

The former featherweight and bantamweight world champion, Rafael Marquez, looked strong in his recent workout with trainer Daniel Zaragoza, as he prepares for his upcoming showdown with WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, which takes place on October 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Tickets are on sale for the Toshiaki Nishioka vs. Rafael Marquez world title fight on Saturday, October 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Nishioka, from Tokyo, will defend his WBC Super Bantamweight title against Marquez of Mexico City in the Marquee Ballroom at the MGM Grand. This will be Nishioka's sixth world title defense. He has a record of 38-4-3, 24 KOs. Marquez is 40-6, 36 KOs.

Former champion Fernando 'Kochulito' Montiel has finished the toughest stage of his training. The former three division champion returns on August 20th in Baja California, against Nicaraguan Alvaro Perez. Montiel wants to gain the second win of year, since the devastating knockout loss to Nonito Donaire in February.

Earlier this week my colleague Dennis Guillermo caught up with WBC and WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire as he attempted to get some insight into the Fil-Am fighter’s immediate plans. Fresh off of the news that he had re-signed with Top Rank Promotions after an ugly court battle over his services, Donaire offered up some surprising sound bites about who he would like to face next.

Trainer Daniel Zaragoza, the former world champion who is now preparing to Rafael Marquez, a former two-division beltholder, at the Otomi Ceremonial Center - wants his boxer to be in the shape possible for the fight with WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, which takes place on October 1 in Las Vegas. Zaragoza was not pleased with the recent physical condition of Marquez.

Former two division champion Rafael Marquez (40-6, 36KOs) believes he is ready for a planned shot at the WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka (38-4-3, 24KOs) of Japan. Marquez returned to the ring last Saturday in Cancun, Mexico and stopped Eduardo Becerril in five rounds. Marquez was fighting for the first time in eight months. He suffered a shoulder injury during last November TKO loss to featherweight Juan Manuel Lopez. The Nishioka bout is tentative for October 1.

At Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico, WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KOs) knocked out Likar Ramos (24-4, 18 KOs) in the first round of a junior welterweight bout. One solid right hand ended Ramos and put him away. The fight was a tune-up to see how Marquez reacts to a higher weight for his November 12 trilogy fight with Manny Pacquiao, which takes place at a catch-weight of 144-pounds.

According to sources close to undefeated junior lightweight Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KOs), two potential opponents being tossed around for his next bout are Rocky Juarez and former two division champion Rafael Marquez. Broner, managed by Al Haymon and promoted by Golden Boy, needed just one round to dispatch Jason Litzau in his last fight, the HBO co-feature to Saul Alvarez's stoppage win over Ryan Rhodes last month.
