More than anything, Ryan Garcia was hopeful that he would eventually nab a world title at 135 pounds. Although he was on the cusp of fighting for a golden trinket, the flamboyant 23-year-old came to the realization that squeezing down his frame to the lightweight limit was essentially impossible.
So, with his time at 135 pounds coming to an end, Garcia is attempting to plant his flag at 140 pounds. Though he’s been lauded for his lightning-quick hands and pernicious knockout power, Regis Prograis is far from impressed.
Currently, even with both fighters now competing in the same weight class, Prograis is dubious to the idea that Garcia would be willing to square off against him. Nevertheless, if Garcia stepped audaciously to the carpet and challenged the 33-year-old for his newly won WBC title, Prograis has a strong hunch that his normal training regime wouldn't be needed.
“I ruin a lot of people,” said Prograis during an interview with BoxingScene.com. “I really do. I fight to beat you up. I feel like Ryan would be a cakewalk. He ain’t gonna be like nothing, at all. I don’t even have to train for him.”
Prograis, ultimately, is still enjoying the euphoric feeling that’s associated with winning a world title. After having his previous reign truncated at the hands of Josh Taylor in 2019, Prograis worked his way back to the top of the pugilistic mountain. Now, with his shoulders laced with gold following his victory over Jose Zepeda, the brash Louisiana native is welcoming all-comers.
Although he initially revealed that he wouldn't spend a single second training for Garcia, Prograis, while slyly smirking, admitted that he was being facetious, but only slightly.
“I’ll train but it won’t be like how I really train. I think Ryan a pretty boy, I don’t think he got that dog in him like that.”
In any event, despite Prograis’s disparaging words, Garcia will be given the opportunity to prove his worth. With all signs pointing to a showdown taking place against Gervonta Davis at some point in mid-April, Prograis acknowledges that he’ll be an interested observer.
But while it appears as though Davis and Garcia will eventually lace up their gloves and settle their differences in the ring, Prograis seriously doubts that Garcia will ever find his pen and step up to the negotiating table to face him.
“I hope so. Will it happen? I don’t know.”
