Koncz Insists That Pacquiao is Still Working With Fortune

“Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz insists that former strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune is still very much a part of Team Pacquiao but that Fortune’s arrival last Sunday was delayed because of Fortune’s schedules and business commitments. Koncz spoke to BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard following reports that the contract to bring back Fortune who parted ways with trainer Freddie Roach some years ago but was re-joining the Pacquiao training camp had been cancelled, and that’s why the strength and conditioning coach hadn’t shown up at Pacquiao’s training camp in General Santos City as expected.

Former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao was sparring hard at the Wild Card Gym in Gen. Santos City. He put in several rounds with Filipino sparring partner Dan Nazareno Jr. and Ghanaian Frederick Lawson, then took part in the some padwork and then refereed a couple of sparring matches between members of the entourage. His brother Bobby Pacquiao got 30,000 pesos for winning his sparring bout, with the judges Michael Koncz and Gerry Penelosa.

Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23KOs) is focused on sending former eight division champion Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38KOs) into retirement on November 23rd at the Cotai Arena in Macau, China. Pacquiao has lost back to back fights coming into this contest. He lost a controversial decision to Tim Bradley in June 2012, and then in December he was knocked out cold in the sixth round of his fourth meeting with Juan Manuel Marquez. If he loses to Rios, even Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, would ask him to retire.

The training camp of Brandon Rios is nearing full swing down in Oxnard, Calif., as the former lightweight titlist continues to push his body to the limit on a daily basis ahead of his Nov. 23 date with Manny Pacquiao. On Wednesday afternoon, Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) could be found sparring a total of ten rounds with prospects Karim “KC” Martinez and Rashad Hughes inside of his trainer Robert Garcia’s personal gym. The action was brisk and physical, as Rios continues honing his skills ahead of what many consider to be an uphill battle against one of this generation’s finest pugilists.

Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao, determined to regain his stature as an elite fighter, began intense training at his General Santos Gym on Thursday for his showdown against the young and exciting Brandon “Bam Bam” Bios in Macau on Nov. 24. Pacquiao didn’t wait for the arrival of celebrated trainer Freddie Roach or strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune, with whom the Filipino ring icon has renewed ties after Roach fired Alex Ariza, to begin sparring. Roach is expected to arrive in BoxingScene.com/Manila on Tuesday after he works the corner of Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cottto, who faces Delvin Rodriguez of the Dominican Republic in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, while Fortune is expected two days earlier.

"Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao who was supposed to step up his training for his WBO International welterweight title fight against the exciting Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios in Macau on November 24 by sparring with Ghana's undefeated IBF Continental Africa welterweight/IBF International welterweight king Fredrick Lawson (21-0, 19KOs) at his MP Towers Gym on Tuesday, decided to postpone the session until Thursday in General Santos City. Pacquiao’s eldest daughter Princess celebrated her birthday Tuesday by bringing cheer to kids at the White Cross Children’s Home in San Juan with both Manny and wife Jinkee in attendance.

Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao is bringing back his first strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune to replace Alex Ariza, who had earlier been fired by celebrated trainer Freddie Roach after a meeting with Pacquiao and adviser Michael Koncz in Macau at the kickoff of the media tour to promote the November 24 showdown with Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios. After failing to get any response to his telephone calls and text messages - Ariza accepted an offer to train Rios for the Pacquiao fight stating that Pacquiao "left him no choice" because he had to earn a living.

“Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao’s first strength and conditioning coach at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, former heavyweight contender Justin Fortune, is looking forward to reuniting with Pacquiao and Roach and Filipino assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez. In an overseas telephone conversation with the BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard, Fortune who set up his own Fortune Gym also in Los Angeles after parting ways with Roach some years ago, said he is “coming over to help Manny, help Freddie put everything into harness. My job will be to help Manny beat (Brandon) Rios” in their WBO International welterweight title fight in Macau on November 24.

"Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao steps up his training for his WBO International welterweight title fight against the exciting Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios in Macau on November 24 when he spars with Ghana's undefeated IBF Continental Africa welterweight champion and newly crowned IBF International king Fredrick Lawson (21-0, 19KOs) at his MP Towers Gym on Tuesday. It will be the first serious sparring session for Pacquiao who last week sparred with General Santos townmate Marlon Alta after his South Korean sparring partner apparently had a difference with his manager and failed to show up.

Junior welterweight contender Brandon Rios is feeling better than ever since hook up with strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, who a few weeks ago was fired by Manny Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach. Rios' trainer, Robert Garcia, added Ariza to their team, with Rios moving up to 147-pounds to face Pacquiao on November 23rd in Macau, China. Ariza and Roach have had a rocky relationship for years, but now they are going to collide in opposite corners. Ariza is confident Rios will be able to pull off the biggest win of his career by beating Pacquiao.
