Ariza Shakes Head at VADA Testing in Pacquiao-Rios

Strength and conditioning coach Alexa Ariza is not exactly satisfied with the testing schedule for next month’s HBO pay-per-view headliner. Ariza currently works with Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23KOs), and he previously worked for several years with eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38KOs). Rios will challenge Pacquiao on November 23rd at the Venetian Resort in Macau, China. VADA [Voluntary Anti-Doping Association] is in charge of the random drug testing protocol for the fight.

Bam Bam Brandon Rios spent his Sunday afternoon hosting a charity event for his foundation Momentum 4 Life as well as Padres Contra Cancer in Westlake Village. Fans and supporters had the opportunity to mix and mingle with Rios with all proceeds from the event going to help both foundations. While Rios was focused on his event, he still took time out to talk about boxing and his upcoming fight in China versus Manny Pacquiao on November 23rd. Rios is confident he will be victorious but he has been recently bothered by the critics not giving him a chance in this contest. More recently he pointed out that after Ruslan Provodnikov defeated Mike Alvarado this past Saturday night, many were already talking if a Provodnikov and Pacquiao fight would be possible making it seem like a Pacquiao win over Rios was a foregone conclusion.

General Santos City - Manny Pacquiao looked awesome during a grueling three-hour workout at the Wild Card Gym of GSC and seemed every inch like the "Fighter of the Decade." After running on the track for ten laps at the Acharon Sports Complex this morning Pacquiao sparred eight rounds with undefeated Ghana welterweight Fredrick Lawson and Britsh light middleweight Liam Vaughan who both were at the receiving end of devastating combinations that brought a pained expression to their faces. Pacquiao caught the lanky Lawson with a looping left and sent him reeling backwards against the ropes even as his knees buckled before nailing Vaughan with a vicious left that ripped into the Brit's solar plexus and took the wind out of him.

Roach Says Pacquiao Looking Very Sharp in Sparring

“Fighter of the Decade”Manny Pacquiao had his best day of sparring last Saturday and looks good according to his celebrated trainer Freddie Roach. Roach told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that Pacquiao sparred eight rounds and that the eight division world champion “is coming back and getting better” as he steps up training for his WBO International welterweight title fight against Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios in Macau on November 24. Roach said Pacquiao was getting some good sparring from Britain’s light middleweight Liam Vaughn, undefeated Ghana welterweight Fredrick Lawson and the surprise package in Filipino welterweight Dan Nazareno who belongs to the stable of Rommel Nazario, son of Pacquiao’s late business manager Rod Nazario.

While he has showed utmost respect to their upcoming opponent’s trainer Robert Garcia during their Asian press tour, Roach feels the 2011 Trainer of the Year awardee is not the man to dread in terms of preparing Brandon Rios sharpen his boxing skills. Roach believes that Garcia’s father Eduardo could impart meaningful techniques to Rios once they slug it out with Manny Pacquiao on November 24 in Macau.

Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas - On Saturday night, WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (31-0-1, 12KOs) boxed his way to a twelve round split decision victory over former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40KOs). The scores were 115-113 for Marquez, 115-113 for Bradley, 116-112 for Bradley. Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum could see a potential fight taking place between Bradley and Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23KOs) - if Rios is capable of beating eight division champion Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38KOs) on November 23rd in Macau, China. If Pacquiao wins, there is no guarantee that Arum would be capable of making a rematch with Bradley, who won a controversial twelve round split decision over the Filipino star in June 2012. The fight itself was not sensational and the overall financial success was lower than most of the major events involving Pacquiao in the last few years.

As he heads into another high-profile matchup, Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez seems to understand that he will be forever linked to his rival Manny Pacquiao. Marquez’s match with WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is one of the most anticipated events of the year, as he is set to meet the Palm Springs native inside of the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas in an HBO pay per view showdown on Saturday night. Marquez’s stock is at an all-time high following his knockout over Pacquiao this past December in their fourth encounter. In another wild fight, Marquez suffered a knockdown of his own and absorbed some big punches before landing a picturesque counter-right hand in the closing seconds of the sixth round to knock Pacquiao unconscious. Pacquiao is lined up with a Nov. 23 bout with rugged former champion Brandon Rios in Macau, China, but it’s only natural to wonder if Marquez would be intrigued by a fifth fight with the Filipino star given how excellent their previous four contests were.

“Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao will have to prepare for his WBO International welterweight title against Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios in Macau on November 24 without his former strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that Fortune “definitely wants to come but he’s not coming because he’s having a real visa problem.” Fortune is the holder of an Australian passport. Arum said “right it looks like he won’t come, not because he doesn’t want to come or people don’t want him to come because Freddie Roach wants him to come, its just the problem of adjusting his visa which is a little complicated.”
