Oscar Valdez Very Eager To Land Showdown With Miguel Berchelt

On November 30 in Las Vegas, former WBO featherweight world champion Oscar Valdez will make his debut in the super featherweight division against Andrés 'Jaguarcito' Gutiérrez in duel of Mexicans.

In the immediate future, Valdez wants to get a crack at the champion of the World Boxing Council, Miguel 'Alacrán' Berchelt.

"If we go out the way we want, with the hand held high after this fight, I think we already deserve the position to face Berchelt," Valdez said in an interview with ESPN Deportes from Los Angeles, California.

Berchelt, 28, has had six successful defenses of his super featherweight title and is seeking to break Julio Cesar Chavez's record of nine defenses in that division.

“If you are a boxer in that division, the goal is to fight him, he is the boxer to beat. I am thinking first of Guitierrez, who deserves all the respect,” added Valdez.

Valdez, who moves up after making six successful defenses at 126 pounds, has decided to take on a new challenge in his career as he climbed up a division and vacated his title.

“There are many things that motivate me, the main thing is my family that gives me the courage to continue. Also trying to become like the big ones is what drives me.... like Chávez, Morales, Arce... and if I had to retire tomorrow I would not be happy with my career, I think there is much to achieve yet and some of that is to go up and win another title,” said Valdez, 28 years-old and with a record of 26-0, 20 knockouts.

It is the third camp for Valdez with Eddy Reynoso, who at the beginning of the month had victories with Canelo Álvarez and Ryan García.

“I am very happy now that I am with Eddy, more than anything I am grateful to him that he opened the doors for me, he has a lot of work with Canelo and at first we doubted if he would have enough time, but on the contrary, we have spent Christmas together. I have learned a lot with Eddy Reynoso and I will demonstrate it in my next fight. In boxing you never stop learning,” added Valdez.

Berchelt would ruin him

Valdez is a fighter with grit but his defense is lacking. Even if he's trained by Reynoso, we can't expect him to turn into a defensive wizard especially having only been with him for two fights going on three with…

I think Valdez has a good chance at beating Berchelt. I think some of Berchelt's best wins have been very opportunistic.
