WBO featherweight world champion Oscar Valdez is hoping that his upcoming return, on January 12, will take place at the Mexico City Arena in what would be his first fight on Mexican soil since his debut in November 2012 in his native Sonora and fifth defense of the featherweight belt of the World Boxing Organization.

Valdez will be training in San Diego, California, with Eddy Reynoso as his new coach. Reynoso is best known as the head trainer of Mexican superstar and WBC, WBA middleweight world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

The overall decision for the fight to take place in Mexico will depend on his manager Frank Espinoza and Bob Arum, the CEO of promotional company Top Rank.

Valdez won a tough defense back in March, with a twelve round decision over former champion Scott Quigg.

But during that contest Valdez suffered broken jaw.

In September, Valdez finally received the go-ahead to begin training for his next fight. And last month Valdez began to put in work with Reynoso, first in Guadalajara and now in California.

Valdez's last 23 fights have taken place in the United States, but the Mexican Olympian wants to defend his title before his people.

"We are not 100 percent sure, but right now I'm thinking about returning for that date and in that location," said Valdez to ESPN Deportes.

"I would love it, I would love to fight in Mexico. Although the truth is I would be willing to fight anywhere, because what I want is to return."

With Reynoso, the Mexican fighter with a record of 24-0 and 19 knockouts, intends to significantly improve his defense while remaining spectacular. After a month of work, Reynoso was surprised and happy with the work that he's done with Valdez.
