Oscar De La Hoya: record, next fight and profile →
Oscar De La Hoya was underwhelmed by the final act of the trilogy in which he once played a significant role. The Hall of Fame former six-division titlist and head of Golden Boy Promotions entered fight week with the hope that the third fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin would be as memorable as the previous two
Oscar De La Hoya isn’t entirely confident that cross promotional fights with Premier Boxing Champions can be made—through no fault of his own, the promoter said.
Dmitry Bivol will defend his WBA Light-Heavyweight World Title against Mandatory Challenger Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on Saturday November 5, live to subscribers worldwide on DAZN (excluding South Korea and MENA). Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) is coming off a huge upset win over Mexican pound-for-pound superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in May, where he retained his 175lbs World Title via a unanimous decision to make it 20 wins from 20 fights.
The team at Golden Boy Promotions was convinced they were in the presence of a future multi-division champ from the moment they added Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez to their roster. That vision is officially one fight away.
Oscar De La Hoya was in Las Vegas as a fan of the sport but also as part of a business trip. The Hall of Fame former six-division champion and head of Golden Boy Promotions sat ringside to watch Brooklyn’s Teofimo Lopez Jr. (17-1, 13KOs) rebound from his lone defeat with a seventh-round stoppage of Mexico’s Pedro Campa (34-2-1, 23KOs) at Resorts World Casino in Las Vegas. His interest in the ESPN main event was both out of friendship with the former lightweight champ and to scout a potential opponent for unbeaten contender Ryan Garcia.
Dana White may have let bygones be bygones with Oscar De La Hoya, but don’t expect the combat sports executives to go shopping for nine irons anytime soon.
Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez continues to move closer to his goal of becoming a two-division titlist. BoxingScene.com has confirmed that the WBA has scheduled a purse bid hearing for August 21—a Sunday—to determine promotional rights for light heavyweight title fight between Ramirez and defending champion Dmitry Bivol. The order comes a day after the WBA rejected a special permit filed by Matchroom Boxing to seek a voluntary fight between Bivol and Joshua Buatsi.
The team at Golden Boy Promotions could not have been more pleased with the ruling handed down by the WBA. Any concern over Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez being cheated out of a light heavyweight title shot was put to rest this week. The WBA rejected a special permit submitted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing seeking an exemption for Dmitry Bivol to bypass his mandatory title fight obligation to instead face England’s Joshua Buatsi.
On Friday afternoon, Golden Boy Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya offered a positive update around negotiations for a potential fight pitting budding contender Ryan Garcia against knockout artist Gervonta Davis.
Figo Ramirez enjoyed a successful U.S. debut in a four-round, unanimous decision win over Francisco Bonilla (6-14-3, 3KOs). All three judges scored the contest 39-36 in favor of Dallas’ Ramirez (2-0, 1KOs), a stablemate of Vergil Ortiz Jr. (18-0, 18KOs) who faces England’s Michael McKinson (22-0, 2KOs) in the DAZN main event Saturday evening at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
