By Cliff Rold - The week’s big events began with a knockout and most expect another before Saturday is done. Luis Collazo reshaped his place on the Welterweight landscape with a one-punch shocker against Victor Ortiz. It wasn’t a surprise Collazo won. The way he did it was. There will be no surprises if WBA/IBO Middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin ends matters early in his latest foray. It’s what he does. The surprise will be if he can finally culminate his chase in 2014. Lineal Middleweight king Sergio Martinez has a big paying event ahead this summer with Miguel Cotto. If he wins there, will he accept the challenge from his number one threat?

Luis Collazo doesn’t consider the fact that his fight Thursday night against Victor Ortiz is in his hometown to be a distinct advantage. Collazo understands that Ortiz is the star among them and the native New Yorker has lost too many close decisions in high-profile fights to feel comfortable about anything if their fight goes to the scorecards. Collazo (34-5, 17 KOs) and Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KOs) will meet Thursday night in a 10-round welterweight fight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (FOX Sports 1; 9 p.m. ET).

The stateside boxing scene gets a rare treat – a relevant fight on a weeknight. That’s not to say that the winner of tonight’s showdown between Luis Collazo and Victor Ortiz becomes the man to beat in the loaded welterweight division. That said, there is plenty that awaits the winner of the scheduled 10-round main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York (Thursday, Fox Sports 1, 9PM ET).

By Cliff Rold - If this was a Saturday night headliner, it wouldn’t feel out of place. That it’s coming on a Thursday makes it feel a little unique. On a weekend where boxing largely goes dark and the Super Bowl takes over the (US) sporting world, this is the fight that has our attention. We need more weekday fights like this. Not to get off track but… …boxing’s reliance on Saturday nights is one of its weaknesses. Great fights used to happen on days other than Saturday. Ali-Frazier, Leonard-Hagler: weekday fights. Boxing was more popular on the American landscape then. When there were more fights on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, it was too. In Japan, fights happen in weekday prime time regularly even now. It’s healthy. Boxing’s audience in the US is often said to skew old. That’s not. That it skews old speaks to the fact that it plays its biggest shows to people who are home Saturday nights. UFC goes with major cards about once a month. Younger fans can do one show a month.
