On Tuesday, Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs) received the coveted WBC interim-middleweight belt, an exquisite limited edition watch from Hublot and a snazzy black sombrero....so he countered with: "Muchas gracias AND viva Mexico!
The belt was presented by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman at a breakfast to honor boxing's most exciting KO King, in Mexico City's Camino Real Hotel.
A previous auction by Hublot of exact replicas of a dozen special addition watches for WBC superstar champions, raised a million dollars for the Jose Sulaiman Fund, which helps retired boxers who have fallen on hard times. Gennady is now the lucky thirteenth recipient.
Gennady said: "it's the biggest day for me and I'm very happy. Of course my main focus is now training to fight WBC Silver Champion Martin Murray on February 21st in Monte Carlo."
A groundswell of opinion is now clamoring for Gennady to take on Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) in a slugfest. And Gennady very much likes the idea. He said:
"In the future a fight against Canelo is definitely possible. It would a present for all the fans!"
