A meeting of the minds between boxing’s biggest superstars of past and present led to an impromptu announcement on Wednesday.
Canelo Alvarez and Eddy Reynoso joined Mike Tyson on the former heavyweight champion’s podcast Hotboxin’ as former multi-division UFC champion Henry Cejudo served as co-host and translator for the program. Images of the show being filmed first made waves online March 11.
One particular question Reynoso asked Tyson led to breaking news when the trainer wondered when the Hall of Fame fighter would fight again following the spirited exhibition versus Roy Jones Jr. in November.
“You can probably drop the news now, Mike,” said Cejudo.
“End of May. Where [Canelo] fought [against Avni Yildirim]. Same arena,” said Tyson, alluding to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. “May 29, or May 31, something like that.”
The two dates Tyson offered land on Memorial Day weekend, with the 29th being a Saturday and the 31st being the actual holiday on Monday.
Tyson was in attendance to watch Alvarez’s third-round knockout win over Yildirim on Feb. 27, perhaps doing some venue scouting in the Sunshine State and imagining what his potential event would look like along the way.
Although Tyson didn’t tell Alvarez or Reynoso who he’d be fighting, the boxer is in advanced discussions and negotiations to fight Evander Holyfield in an exhibition match.
If Tyson chooses to do future exhibitions and move forward with his Legends Only League, Triller has the first and last right of refusal to obtain the rights of the show, Triller owner Ryan Kavanaugh has previously told BoxingScene.com
Kavanaugh has also previously said the Teofimo Lopez Jr. versus Geroge Kambosos Jr. Triller Fight Club PPV will be a separate show and not staged on the same card as a potential Tyson-Holyfield match.
On March 4, Lopez posted and quickly deleted a tweet announcing that his fight would take place June 5 in Miami.
