Miguel Marriaga: record, next fight and profile →
NEW YORK – In a move that was expected based on actions taken throughout the sports world, Top Rank’s Carl Moretti announced during a press conference Thursday that the promotional company’s boxing cards scheduled for Saturday night and Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater will take place without fans in attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic.
LAS VEGAS – If everything goes as planned Saturday night, Shakur Stevenson wants to face Josh Warrington next. Stevenson, who is heavily favored to beat Miguel Marriaga, has no problem whatsoever traveling to England to meet Warrington in his hometown for what would be an intriguing 126-pound title unification bout between unbeaten champions. One thing that could prevent Stevenson-Warrington from occurring would be Warrington taking a bout before fighting Stevenson, who’ll make the first defense of his WBO featherweight title against Marriaga.
By Thomas Gerbasi - Note to the friends and family of Shakur Stevenson. When June 28 rolls around, gifts will not be necessary, as the WBO featherweight champion plans on staying 22 years old forever. “Honestly, I really don't want to age no more,” Stevenson laughs when the topic of being 22, a world champion and a star on the rise with...
Dangerous Colombian puncher and challenger to the world featherweight championship of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Miguel "Scorpio" Marriaga, has already arrived in New York, for what will be a tough showdown this Saturday March 14, at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden.
Shakur Stevenson, the 22-year-old phenom on the cusp of pound-for-pound greatness, will make the first defense of his WBO featherweight world title Saturday, March 14, against three-time world title challenger Miguel “Escorpión” Marriaga at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Shakur Stevenson and Josh Warrington might have a few months to keep their Twitter fingers active. The pair of unbeaten featherweight titlists have enjoyed a lengthy back-and-forth through social media as talks continue for a potential unification bout in 2020. However, it appears that such a fight will no longer be next on the schedule, at least not for Newark’s Stevenson (13-0, 7KOs) whom BoxingScene.com has learned is being groomed for a voluntary title defense in March.
Miguel Marriaga has previously fallen short at the title level but has done his best to punch his way back into contention. The hard-hitting featherweight from Cartagena, Colombia delivered a highlight reel 6th round stoppage of Alfredo Mejia in his latest performance this past Saturday in Puebla, Mexico. A left hook to the liver forced Mejia (14-3-3, 5KOs) to double over and roll around the canvas in pain as he was counted out in their ESPN+ streamed bout.
Three-time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga stopped Alfredo Mejia in the sixth round Saturday night at the Auditorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico. With the victory, Marriaga, who resides in Cartagena, Colombia, improves to 29-3, 25 knockouts. Marriaga last fought on May 11 in Tucson, Arizona, overcoming a knockdown to stop hard-hitting Ruben Cervera after the third round. Mejia had won his last two bouts against nondescript opposition.
Miguel Marriaga isn’t ready to give up on his dream of becoming a featherweight titlist—no matter how many attempts it requires. The Colombia slugger managed his third straight win with a 3rd round stoppage of countryman Ruben Cervera in their modified lightweight scrap Saturday evening at Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Ariz. Cervera accepted the fight on two days’ notice.
Tuscon, Arizona - Colombia’s Miguel Marriaga (28-3, 24KOs) continues to prove it takes a world-class level talent to get the best of him. That never stopped countryman and late replacement Ruben Cervera from fighting his heart out until being forced to quit on his stool prior to the start of the fourth round of their modified lightweight contest.
