Miguel Marriaga: record, next fight and profile →
World ranked featherweight contender Miguel "The Scorpion" Marriaga (29-3 26 KO's) of Arjona, Colombia will return to the ESPN platform on Thursday July 16th, as part of a Top Rank promoted card taking place at 'The Bubble' within the MGM Grand's Conference Center in Las Vegas.
Miguel Marriaga wasn’t one of the options Shakur Stevenson’s handlers considered for his fight Tuesday night. Travel restrictions related to COVID-19 would’ve prevented Colombia’s Marriaga from flying to the United States to face Stevenson. Even if Marriaga remained in the U.S. once his March 14 fight versus Stevenson was canceled March 12, he might not have been the unbeaten WBO featherweight champion’s opponent for this fight.
Featherweight contender Miguel Marriaga admits he was mentally crushed when Top Rank informed him and his team that a scheduled fight with WBO champion Shakur Stevenson was being canceled. Marriaga was scheduled to fight Stevenson this past Saturday night, March 14, at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
By Keith Idec - NEW YORK – Now that Shakur Stevenson’s fight against Miguel Marriaga has been postponed, when he’ll return isn’t the most pressing question the undefeated featherweight faces. First and foremost, Stevenson must decide who, and at which weight, he wants to fight next. Marriaga was an optional opponent, a puncher, but also a big...
After announcing Thursday afternoon that boxing fans wouldn’t be permitted to attend cards Saturday night and Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater, Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. postponed those two shows indefinitely Thursday night due to concerns over the fast-spreading coronavirus.

NEW YORK – Miguel Marriaga leaned in for a handshake from Shakur Stevenson toward the end of a press conference Thursday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Stevenson, obviously mindful of the coronavirus, instead extended his closed hand for a fist bump. The unbeaten WBO featherweight champion is among the boxers scheduled to compete on cards Saturday night and Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater who are alarmed that none of them had been tested as of Thursday afternoon for the coronavirus.
Recently crowned featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson is already talking a big game, even though he’s yet to defend the WBO title he won last October in a one-sided beating of Joet Gonzalez. The 22-year-old Stevenson (13-0, 7 KOs) will fight Miguel Marriaga (29-3, 25 KOs) at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York on May 14, and he’s already operating with the mentality of “who’s next?”
Miguel Marriaga knew precisely what he wanted heading into his last fight—and it wasn’t just a win in a fight where one was expected. By the time he landed a perfectly placed body shot to send Alfredo Meija to the canvas, it was on to new business as far as the Colombian slugger was concerned. No time was wasted in calling out then newly crowned featherweight titlist Shakur Stevenson (13-0, 7KOs), with that very wish granted as he enters his fourth shot at a major title.
LAS VEGAS – Shakur Stevenson doesn’t just want to dominate Miguel Marriaga over 12 rounds Saturday night. The unbeaten WBO featherweight champion is anxious to make “a statement” when they fight for his 126-pound championship at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. The 22-year-old Stevenson (13-0, 7 KOs) has gone the distance in two of his past three fights, but he wants to become the first fighter to truly knock out Colombia’s Marriaga (29-3, 25 KOs) in a main event ESPN will televise
