McDonnell Hits Japan, Feels Confident of Shocking Naoya Inoue

By Hisao Adachi

On Sunday, World Boxing Association (WBA) "regular" bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell (29-2-1, 13KOs) arrived in Japan, precisely at the airport International Haneda of Tokyo.

He is scheduled to defend his crown for the sixth time against sensational unbeaten Japanese Naoya Inoue (15-0, 13KOs) on Friday, May 25, at Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo.

Inoue, regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing, is looking to capture his third divisional title.

Upon arriving in Tokyo, the world champion expressed his confidence in winning the upcoming bout - where he is widely viewed as a massive underdog.

"Right now I am in unbeatable physical and mental conditions like never before. I have a good understanding that Naoya Inoue is a great boxer and a knockout artist and he's one of the best fighters in the world, pound for pound, but I can box with anyone. I am unbeaten for the last ten year and I am a long-time world champion for four years," McDonnell said.

"I came to Japan to prove that I am the very strong world champion. I am very excited and motivated with this fight against Naoya Inoue. I have heard that Naoya Inoue is going to knock me out. I think that Naoya Inoue has never fought someone like me in his entire career.

"I am convinced that I am the best bantamweight in the world, I will have to demonstrate my unequivocal superiority to Naoya Inoue, who will know that there is a difference in the boxing level between me and him.. of course I am superior to him.

McDonnell is the first English fighter to go to Japan to make a defense of a world title. He holds two victories by decision over Japan's Tomoki Kameda - with both fights taking place in Texas in 2015.

The WBA bantamweight king Jamie McDonnell makes a statement that he strongly proposes to participate in the attractive World Boxing Super Series tournament after victimizing Naoya Inoue in Japan.
