LAS VEGAS – Tickets to Mayweather-McGregor were extremely expensive.
Too expensive, apparently.
The official attendance for Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s technical knockout of Conor McGregor was just 14,623 at T-Mobile Arena, more than 5,000 seats short of a sellout. T-Mobile Arena can accommodate roughly 20,500 fans for boxing. There were several sections toward the upper reaches of the arena that were completely empty Saturday night.
Price points for tickets to the heavily hyped Mayweather-McGregor event were $10,000, $7,500, $5,000, $3,500, $2,500, $1,500 and $500. More than 6,000 tickets remained on the secondary market earlier this week and many of those tickets ultimately went unsold.
The last main event at T-Mobile Arena – Canelo Alvarez’s 12-round domination of fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – drew a capacity crowd of 20,510 on May 6. Alvarez-Chavez did not, however, generate nearly as much money in ticket revenue as Mayweather-McGregor because tickets were much cheaper.
Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather Promotions’ CEO, said during the post-fight press conference that he wasn’t disappointed with the turnout Saturday night.
“I wouldn’t say that,” Ellerbe said. “Just sometimes you – it’s all about delivering. I think the fans enjoyed themselves, the ones who were here. It was a great event, you know, a wonderful turnout. You’re not always gonna get it right. We get it right more often than not, though.”
Ellerbe also said that he still expects that when the gate revenue is tallied that it’ll exceed the boxing record of roughly $72 million in ticket revenue from Mayweather’s victory over Manny Pacquiao in May 2015 at MGM Grand.
Mayweather added during the post-fight press conference that he expects the ticket revenue from Saturday night to surpass $80 million.
Thought the enormous event didn’t sell out, it drew numerous celebrities. They included NBA superstars LeBron James, Paul George, James Harden and Isaiah Thomas, power couple Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez, actors Jamie Foxx, Chris Hemsworth, William H. Macy, Jeremy Piven and Bruce Willis, actress Charlize Theron, rappers Nas and Sean “Diddy” Combs, and metal legend Ozzy Osbourne and his wife, Sharon.
