Gervonta Davis (22-0, 21 KOs) is the next superstar of the sport, according to his promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather, a former five division world champion, was the last crossover mega-star of the sport. He retired back in August of 2017. Mayweather co-holds the top three pay-per-view buyrate records, among others.
Davis, who recently held the WBA super featherweight title, is expected to move up to the lightweight division. As BoxingScene.com recently reported, Davis is going to face Olympic gold medal winner and former world champion Yurioksi Gamboa on December 28th, as a Showtime televised main event.
It is expected that Davis and Gamboa, the two highest ranked fighters under the WBA at 135-pounds, will fight for the vacant "regular" lightweight title. Vasiliy Lomachenko is the WBA's "super" champion at 135, and also holds the WBC and WBO titles. He plans to fight the winner of the December IBF title clash between Richard Commey and Teofimo Lopez.
Should Davis win that fight with Gamboa, he is expected to target one of the other world champions at 135-pounds.
Mayweather expects him to continue his streak of wins, by knockout. He doesn't see anyone on the horizon that can beat him.
"He's an unbelievable fighter and they can’t stop him," Mayweather said to TMZ Sports.
"He’s the best at what he do. I’m behind him. I look at him like a son, ya know? I’ve been working with him for years now. And, the only thing we’re gonna do is keep racking those victories and beating the best they got out there."
