Towering 6? 9? Kazakhstani heavyweight Ivan Dychko will return to the ring this Friday, July 6, at Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Dychko, the two-time Olympic super-heavyweight bronze medallist (6-0, 6 KOs), will face long-time heavyweight gate keeper Maurice “Mo Bettah” Harris (26-21-3, 11 KOs) of East Orange, New Jersey, in an eight-round showdown on Heavyweight Factory Boxing’s “Hometown Throwdown” event.
In the opener, 20-year old Jr. lightweight Roger Gutierrez (9-0-1, 7 KO) of Maracaibo, Venezuela, scored an easy technical knockout in two rounds. Gutierrez used a left uppercut to bust the nose of 23-year old Luis Nino (5-4, 4 KO) of Caracas, Venezuela, in the second round. A right hand turned Nino torso first to the ropes and referee Juan Martinez halted the action.
LOS ANGELES - Five months after one of the biggest victories of his professional career against Kevin Mitchell, WBC Lightweight World Champion Jorge "El Nino de Oro" Linares will celebrate by fighting in his native Venezuela for the first time in more than five years as he defends his title for the second time against Mexico's Ivan "Macanon" Cano on Saturday, October 10. The 12-round title fight, which will take place at The Poliedro de Caracas, will air on ESPN Deportes on Sunday, October 11 starting at 9:00 p.m. ET on a two-hour tape delay. It will be Linares' first bout in his home country since a 10-round decision victory over Francisco Lorenzo on March 27, 2010.
Middle-aged heavyweight Maurice Harris was fortunate to avoid a third straight loss, struggling to an eight-round draw with fleshy heavyweight Grover Young. Each fighter won by scores of 77-75, with a third judge seeing the fight even at 76-76. Those at ringside who stayed awake long enough to make it through the dull affair believed Young—whose decepitive sub .500 hardly reflects the efforts he puts forth in each fight—deserved the nod, by way of his superior body work.
Joey Tiberi (11-1) dominated the outmatched Darrell Martin (4-15) over the course of 4 rounds. Tiberi simply outboxed Martin, who seemed unwilling to engage. After 4 rounds of action the judges scored the bout 38-37 & 40-36 x 2 in favor of Tiberi. In the opening bout of the evening, John "Church Boy" Bowman (7-0-1) put on a clinic against Kenneth Moody (2-5-1) throughout 4 rounds. Bowman consistently pushed Moody against the ropes for all 4 rounds landing clear combinations. Moody simply had no answer for Bowman's speed from the opening bell. At the end of 4 rounds the judges scored the bout 40-36 across the board for Bowman.
On August 23rd, USBA #10 Amir "Hardcore" Mansour (18-0) will look to continue his path of carnage in the heavyweight division when he takes on USBA #9 Maurice "Sugar Moe" Harris (26-17-2). The outcome will lay down the blueprint for both warriors' careers. Amir Mansour has suffered many setbacks in his pro boxing career and none of which were suffered inside of the ring. At the age of 41, Mansour has completed numerous jail sentences. Mansour will not allow past issues to deter his dream of carrying the Heavyweight Championship. For most the age of 41 signifies the end of a career but in Mansour's case it is different. Mansour has not taken punishment throughout his career like his counterpart. Not to mention most of "Hardcore's" in ring encounters never make it the distance.
After Tomasz Adamek signed a contract to face IBO/IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, he was dropped from a possible IBF eliminator with Samuel Peter (34-4, 27KOs). A possible name to replace Adamek, against Peter, is Maurice Harris (24-14, 10KOs). Harris is an upset minded fighter who faces everyone. Since his return to the sport last year after a three year layoff, Harris beat Billy Zumbrun, Robert Hawkins, Julius Long and Nagy Aguilera.
