Great last half of the fight as Gervonta Davis landed 11 punches in the first 4 rounds and then 85 in the final 6.5 rounds. Davis landed 45% of his power punches (82/182). The game Mario Barrios outlanded Davis in 6 of the 10 completed rounds.
By Keith Idec - ATLANTA – Size definitely didn’t matter to Gervonta Davis on Saturday night. A shorter Davis moved up two weight classes and knocked out previously unbeaten 140-pound champion Mario Barrios in the 11th round of an entertaining title fight that drew a capacity crowd of 16,570 to State Farm Arena. Barrios stands at least five inches taller than Davis and out-weighed him in the ring, but Davis’ devastating power and speed nullified Barrios’ size advantage in their Showtime Pay-Per-View main event.

ATLANTA – Fighting Gervonta Davis wasn’t on Mario Barrios’ radar at all when Barrios boxed on Davis’ undercard October 31 in San Antonio. Barrios didn’t even stay at Alamodome to watch Davis battle Leo Santa Cruz in the main event after Barrios beat Ryan Karl by sixth-round knockout that night in Barrios’ hometown. Saying that the unbeaten WBA super lightweight champion was completely caught off guard when he first learned Davis wanted to fight him next would be an understatement.
ATLANTA – Leonard Ellerbe accepts that most of Gervonta Davis’ doubters will never be satisfied with what he does in a boxing ring. The CEO for Mayweather Promotions still couldn’t help but remind them during an open workout Wednesday night at the College Football Hall of Fame that the undefeated Davis will attempt something highly unusual Saturday night. The significantly shorter southpaw will move up two weight classes – from the junior lightweight limit of 130 pounds to the junior welterweight maximum of 140 pounds – to challenge another undefeated fighter, Mario Barrios, for his WBA world super lightweight title at State Farm Arena.
ATLANTA – Batyr Akhmedov doesn’t blame anyone but himself for his controversial loss to Mario Barrios. Akhmedov is certain he did enough to beat Barrios in their 12-round fight for the then-vacant WBA world super lightweight title in September 2019. Uzbekistan’s Akhmedov knew, though, that if he didn’t dominate Barrios, he’d have a tough time beating Barrios on the scorecards.
Mario Barrios is confident that the best available version of Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will show up for tonight's fight. The unbeaten San Antonio native is equally confident of scoring his biggest win to date.
Gervonta Davis is expecting his next fight to go a lot like the night he first fought for a major title. The unbeaten knockout artist from Baltimore moves up two weight divisions for his next fight, a showdown with undefeated secondary WBA junior welterweight titlist Mario Barrios. The bout takes place Saturday evening on Showtime Pay-Per-View from State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
