Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi believes Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder could become the next great heavyweight trilogy - following the path of Evander Holyfield vs. Riddick Bowe.

The two undefeated punchers are looking to fight each other and many hope their showdown will happen this year.

Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) retained his WBC world title with a tenth round stoppage of undefeated Cuban puncher Luis Ortiz at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

And Joshua retained his IBF, IBO, WBA titles - while capturing the WBO title - with a twelve round unanimous decision over Joseph Parker at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

The teams behind both men are claiming that a showdown can happen this year - but many fans have their doubts.

"I would love to see the fight this year. It's a situation where you could get two fights, maybe three, like a Holyfield-Bowe trilogy. It would really be something. If you're going to get that, you have to start now because even the Holyfield-Bowe trilogy took years," Malignaggi said to Sky Sports.

"If you're going to have a long rivalry between these two, you probably want to get the first one out of the way this year. Then maybe there will be a second and a third in years to come."

As far as picking the winner, Malignaggi could see it going either way.

"I would love to see it next. It's hard for me to pick a favourite. I see tactical things that Wilder has an advantage with, and I see tactical things that Joshua has an advantage with," Malignaggi said.

"Of course, if they land with power, the other one is going to sleep. At this point, Wilder hits harder. It's two fights in a row that Joshua could have gone the distance - Carlos Takam was stopped early. But it doesn't matter - if Joshua hits you on the chin, you're going to sleep."
