Magdaleno-Dogboe Could Land in Philly or Maryland on April 28

By Steve Kim

WBO super bantamweight titlist, Jesse Magdaleno, is scheduled to face his mandatory challenger (and WBO interim champion) Isaac Dogboe in his upcoming bout. The date being talked about his April 28th. The question now is just where this match-up will take place.

Mike Altamura, the adviser for Dogboe (18-0, 12 KO's), told BoxingScene.com on Tuesday afternoon - "The venue is TBA, they (Top Rank) had spoken to us about running at the MGM National Harbor in Maryland but the latest venue that's being brandied around is Philadelphia. So I'm guessing that maybe they'll have a little bit of a local influence on the card.

"But I'm good with Maryland, Philadelphia. There's probably more Ghanian's there than Mexican's. So I'm cool with either location."

Dogboe -who is promoted by Rising Star Africa Promotions - stopped Cesar Juarez in five rounds on January 6th to win the interim title. Juarez, who was the number one contender in the WBO was scheduled to face Magdaleno back in November before Magdaleno pulled out of the fight claiming an injury.

The question is, will Magdaleno make weight given his spotty history?

"I told Top Rank - and I'm still waiting on the final agreement - Magdaleno's said a couple of things in the press saying we haven't signed. We haven't signed because his promoter hasn't sent me a final agreement, yet. But we'll sign straight away. I've asked for there to be extreme conditions if (Magdaleno) doesn't make weight and we'll counter-sign the same conditions," Altamura said.

"Bob Arum suggested to me maybe the punishment is 12 lashes. I said to him,'Well, in 1788 there was a ruling by the United States government that if somebody practices witchcraft that they'd get 15 lashes. I figure allowing for time differences - and not making weight is a lot worse than witchcraft - that there should be 122 lashes to Jesse and 122 to his manager, Frank Espinoza, if he doesn't make weight."

That's certainly a novel approach.

"But kidding aside, he's a professional, he knows a world title is on the line," continued Altamura. "This is the first time in his career he's been put in a fight that's been forced upon him. So I expect him to bring his absolute best."

Nice looking venue, but small. Holds like 2-3000.
