Luis Nery: record, next fight and profile →
By Cliff Rold - There are plenty of fight fans looking forward to August 15th. There are less of them in the US market than elsewhere. American fight fans, fairly enough, have their eye on an excellent Jr. welterweight unification match, a big middleweight showdown in September, and the carnie bit in between. If summe...
Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, who's been visiting Mexico City, says the fight between Juan Francisco "Gallo" Estrada and Carlos "Príncipe" Cuadras, will steal the show on the "Superfly" card, where Román González, Sirsaket Sor Rungvisai and Naoya Inoue will also be fighting.
WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka insists attempting to match a 37-year-old Japanese record will not affect his performance when he fights Mexican challenger Luis Nery next month. Yamanaka, 34, will be aiming to tie former WBA light flyweight champion Yoko Gushiken’s record of 13 consecutive world title defenses when he takes on his 22-year-old top-ranked opponent at Shimadzu Arena in Kyoto on Aug. 15.
When Shinsuke Yamanaka began boxing in high school, all he wanted to do was become a world champion. He accomplished that, but never thought his reign would last this long. Yamanaka, the WBC bantamweight champ, will face young challenger Luis Nery on Aug. 15 at Shimadzu Arena Kyoto, his Teiken Gym announced on Wednesday.
A deal has been reached. Luis "Pantera" Nery will receive his great opportunity, when fights for the world championship. The televised card got started with an important clash at bantamweight. 22-year old Luis Nery (23-0, 17 KO), 118, of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, earned a mandatory shot at long reigning WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka with a fifth-round stoppage of Colombian Jesus Martinez. Martinez took a beating through rounds three and four and was kept on the stool prior to the fifth. The referee was Abdiel Baragon.

By Jake Donovan - It was three years ago when – with all of just one fight in his pro career – Vasyl Lomachenko shared honors with Felix Verdejo as BoxingScene.com 2013 Prospect(s) of the Year. The two-time Olympic Gold medalist has already become a two-division champion, winning his second title earlier this year and was deep in the debate for 2016 Fighter of the Year, along with recognition as one of the very best pound-for-pound boxers in the world.
