by Cliff Rold The winner got next, right? It’s unofficial, but still impossible not to look at this weekend’s big Super Middleweight fight as a semi-final for December’s Super Six tournament final. If not a semi, it has the feel of a qualifying round, particularly for the defending titlist. Lucian Bute, for various reasons, wasn’t included in the Super Six field. While the rest of the best in the world at 168 lbs. did battle, Bute sold tickets and looked increasingly beastly on an island. He won style points while the men who will made the Super Six final, Andre Ward and Carl Froch, piled up points against superior competition. Unless he’s lost it since a loss to Froch in June, the rugged Johnson brings a depth of ring character and experience Bute has never seen. The Canadian draw has arrived at his measuring stick moment.

By Thomas Gerbasi - Patience and hope. It’s what IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute runs on these days. Patience, as he waits for the conclusion of the seemingly never-ending Super Six tournament on December 17th, when Andre Ward meets Carl Froch in the finals in Atlantic City. Hope, as it’s clear that for all his talent and his over four year reign with the IBF belt, he won’t truly be seen as the undisputed top 168-pounder in the world if he doesn’t meet and beat the Ward-Froch winner. In between, danger lurks everywhere, as one misstep will crush all that work, all that running alongside the Super Six train while keeping his own schedule busy. And to his credit, the 31-year old southpaw has been a fighting champion, worthy of any and all praise thrown in his direction. No, Librado Andrade, Edison Miranda, Jesse Brinkley, Brian Magee, and Jean Paul Mendy do not stack up with the Super Six likes of Ward, Froch, Arthur Abraham, and Mikkel Kessler, but Bute did to his challengers what a champion is supposed to do with those in his way – he dispatched them with efficiency and finality, knocking out each of the aforementioned foes. The wins have made Bute’s case as the top dog at 168-pounds, something that won’t be confirmed in the eyes of the public until he hands a defeat to Ward or Froch, but in the meantime, he will continue to fight, and this Saturday at the Pepsi Coliseum in the Romanian’s adopted home province of Quebec, he will meet not only his greatest challenge, but one that could propel his career even further, as he will battle late Super Six entrant Glen Johnson. “I have a good feeling,” said Bute

IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (29-0, 24 KOs) met face to face with former champ Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-15-2, 35 KOs) at their official weigh-in, which took place in Quebec City. They collide this Saturday night in a Showtime televised main event from the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada. Both boxers were ripped and ready for battle. Bute weigehd 166.4-pounds, while the challenger was 166.5.

To many, Lucian Bute is the best super middleweight not in Showtime’s “Super Six” tournament. That might not matter much longer.

IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (29-0, 24 KOs) met face to face with former champ Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-15-2, 35 KOs) at their final press conference in Quebec City. They collide this Saturday night in a Showtime televised main event from the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada. In the televised co-feature, Pier-Olivier Cote (17-0, 11 KOs) faces Jorge Luis Teron (25-2-1, 17 KOs). CHRIS DeBLASIO: Senior Director of Sports Communications, Showtime Networks Inc.: “This is the type of fight that has defined SHOWTIME boxing over the years - a tough, competitive and meaningful matchup in a talented and deep division. “Glen Johnson is the consummate professional. Through nearly 70 professional fights, Glen has shown the willingness to go anywhere and fight anyone. And he doesn't just show up in any arena, any country, Glen brings everything he's got into the ring every time. “As for Lucian Bute, he has proven to be one of the most talented and exciting fighters in boxing. He's expressed a willingness to fight the very best in the division. And now he has that opportunity in front of him. “Together Glen Johnson and Lucian Bute embody everything that is right about boxing. They embody the true essence of sport and competition. On behalf of everyone at SHOWTIME Sports, we are proud to be part of this terrific event and proud that we can continue to deliver the best boxing on television to our loyal subscribers.” JEAN BEDARD, President of InterBox: “InterBox is extremely thrilled to return to Quebec City to present the ninth title defense for Lucian Bute against Glen Johnson. I've been associated with boxing for seven years and, looking back, one of my fondest memories was being in the car coming back from Quebec City with Lucian and (trainer) Stephan (Larouche), with the Black Eyed Peas' song ‘I've got a Feeling’ blasting on the radio after an incredible victory over Librado Andrade. I have a feeling that I'm going to relive the same memory on Saturday night. “Everybody is telling me that Glen Johnson represents the biggest challenge in Lucian's career. We'll see if that's true the night of the fight. “Lucian gets better with every fight and this fight will be no different. “One of the advantages to being a promoter is that I can focus on promoting. I have a great team behind me who work out all the necessary details and I put all of my faith in Stephan Larouche to take care of Lucian and his preparations - which is a given because with Lucian, the last thing you need to worry about is his preparation. “A tremendous amount of work goes into preparing a quality event like this. I'd like to thank SHOWTIME personally for coming to Quebec and to the media who always come out in droves, and to all of our partners including Coors Light and La Cage Aux Sports who have all found a way to make this event the biggest it can be.” LEON MARGULES, Warriors Boxing: “I'd like to thank SHOWTIME once again for putting on a really spectacular boxing event. What SHOWTIME has done with the Super Six tournament and other fights in the super middleweight division has been outstanding. It's the best division in boxing. “Quebec has some of the best boxing fans in North America, maybe the world. I was excited to come up here. I know this is work for me but the atmosphere will be electric.” STEPHAN LAROUCHE, Bute’s Trainer: “When Glen and Lucian would spar, everyone in the gym would stop training to watch them fight. As a trainer, I thought, ‘If this is a sparring session, what would a fight be like?’ Saturday, we all get to find out.” ORLANDO CUELLAR, Johnson’s Trainer: “It's going to be a good fight. Lucian is a good fighter but no good fighter stays undefeated for a long time. Fighters have to take chances, like Lucian is with Glen. We respect them but we came here to take care of business. On Saturday, we will.” Steve Albert will call the action with Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver providing color commentary and Jim Gray serving as ringside reporter. David Dinkins Jr. is the executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports with Ray Smaltz producing and Bob Dunphy directing.

Glen Johnson will turn 43 in two months and is 2-3 over the last two years. He hopes, however, to prove that he’s still capable of beating elite-level opponents, beginning Saturday night in Quebec City against unbeaten IBF super middleweight champ Lucian Bute (Showtime; 9 p.m. EDT; 6 p.m. PDT).

Much fanfare will herald the final of the Super Six tournament in Atlantic City next month when Carl Froch and Andre Ward square off for the supposed status of the world's number one super-middleweight.

Glen Johnson wasn’t Lucian Bute’s No. 1 choice of opponents for his fight a week from Saturday, but the unbeaten Bute considers “The Road Warrior” to be the toughest opponent he has faced in his eight-year pro career.

NEW YORK – With a shot at the biggest fight in Super Middleweight history on the line, undefeated superstar and International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight Champion Lucian Bute will make the ninth defense of his 168-pound title against ageless former light heavyweight champion Glen “The Road Warrior’’ Johnson on Saturday, Nov. 5, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).
