Lightweight contender George Kambosos, Jr. of Australia used boxing as an outlet when he was younger. Now he is using boxing to make a living and making a name for himself.
Kambosos could be on the fast track toward a world title shot. He faces Jose Forero Saturday night at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The fight will be streamed live through dbe1.com (6 p.m. ET/ 3 p.m. PT).
The 24-year-old Kambosos, who resides in Sydney, will be making his U.S. debut Saturday. He last fought on Oct. 13, stopping Krai Sttehaphon in round nine.
Lou DiBella, who signed Kambosos (13-0, 7 knockouts) to a promotional deal last month, believes Kambosos’ style will appeal to boxing fans in the United States.
“I believe he is the best boxing prospect in Australia,” DiBella told BoxingScene.com Thursday. “He is aggressive and is beginning to sit down more on his punches. George is generating more of a following in Australia with each outing.”
Kambosos is ranked number five by the WBA and number 11 by the WBO.
DiBella wants to see how Kambosos will do against Forero (13-6-1, 11 KOs) before deciding what would be the next move for Kambosos, who picked up boxing as a child to avoid getting picked on. The determination and hard work Kambosos has put in the gym has made him into the contender he is today.
“George was very heavy when he was kid and was bullied because of it,” said DiBella. “George took a hobby and made it into a successful career. He has that hunger that few people have. He has been successful so far and I believe he is only going to get better.”
Kambosos is currently managed by Peter Khan.
Forero, who resides in San Francisco, Panama, has lost four of his last five bouts.
